The First City has 1.3 lakh epileptics
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 14
Of the 2.5 to five persons per thousand who suffer from epilepsy, 1.3 lakh are in the National Capital alone. The good news, however, is that the disease is curable in 60 to 70 per cent cases.

Doctors in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences today called for increasing awareness about the disease, which they claim can happen to anyone in any age group at any stage of life.

The AIIMS would observe the International Epilepsy Day on November 17 by organising an awareness programme for the patients and the general public, the doctors said.

There are at present 50 million people in the world suffering from epilepsy and in India about one in 200 people will be having seizures at some point of their lifetime, the doctors added.

Sixty to 70 per cent of newly diagnosed cases of both children and adults can be treated with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), while there were 10 to 30 per cent which required surgery, said Prof. Madhuri Behari, head of the Neurology Department of the AIIMS, addressing a news conference here jointly with Dr Manjari Tripathi and Dr MV Padma of her department. The surgery for epilepsy was at present available only at the AIIMS in north India, but the PGI at Chandigarh was just starting out. Besides, the facility exists at Trivandrum in Kerala.

Prof. Behari said the main hurdle in controlling epilepsy was ignorance about the nature of the disease and the treatment available.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterised by a tendency to frequent seizures caused by sudden, usually brief, excessive electrical discharges in a group of brain cells. These discharges can occur in different parts of the brain and the precise way in, which epilepsy can occur varies, depending on the particular brain cell involved.

Any brain disease or injury can cause the disease. Infections including parasites, vascular diseases and tumours are the main causes of epilepsy. However, not all patients with brain disease or injury has epilepsy without any detectable brain disease, the neurologists said.
