500 patients benefit from diabetes camp

Diabetes is a large and growing health problem in addition to being an expensive disease as it involves complications. The majority of these complications can be prevented or delayed with timely intervention.

Achieving this goal, however, requires a well-organised and well-coordinated care. Patients require education and support to assist with daily self-management.

The number of people with diabetes is increasing in the world at large and Indians have the highest prevalence of the disease.

In India, over 10 million people are suffering from diabetes of whom majority are of Type 2.

With diabetes, especially in the middle-aged population group, the chances are high of developing acute and chronic complications like proneness to frequent infections of urine, skin and sinuses; metabolic complications like diabetic ketocidosis, hyperglycemia and non-ketotic coma. November 14 is observed as the Diabetes Day World over.

A free diabetes camp organised jointly by the Hero DMC Heart Institute and Dayanand Medical College and Hospital witnessed huge rush as nearly 500 persons from all over the city came forward to avail the services at the camp. Expert endocrinologist, cardiologists, cardio-thoracic surgeons, dieticians and yoga consultants were available under one roof to provide free consultation to the patients suffering from diabetes. The camp was organised in the OPD complex of Hero DMC Heart Institute. Free ECG and Blood sugar tests were done and free medicines were distributed.

The camp started with the disease awareness lectures delivered by Dr G.S.Wander, Dr Parminder Singh, Dr Daljit Singh and Dr Sandeep Puri who emphasized on the prevention of the diabetes by improving the lifestyle and healthy eating habits.

There was also a special cookery/diet show in which various dishes were specially prepared and their methods of preparation displayed in an exhibition which drew a lot of interest and response from people. A diabetes quiz was organised for the nurses of Hero DMCH Heart Institute as well.

Christian Medical College and Hospital organised a Diabetic educational exhibition in the reception area.

Dental, eye check-up camp

Mandi Gobindgarh, November 14
The Saheed Udham Singh Memorial Youth Welfare and Sports Club, Salana, organised a dental and eye check-up camp at Salana village yesterday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Sandeep Hans, SDM, Amloh, while Capt Kanwaljit Singh, former Punjab Finance Minister, was the chief guest at the closing function.

As many as 450 patients were examined.

City teams for Punjab rural games announced

The following boys and girls (under-16) are representing Ludhiana district in the Punjab State Rural Games being organised at Sangrur from today to November 16. According to Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer, these players will take part in five disciplines namely athletics, kho-kho, hockey and kabaddi (boys and girls), wrestling (boys) during the three-day meet.

The names of the boys and girls are — kho-kho (boys) — Yadwinder Singh, Amrik Singh, Titu, Bitu, Rajbir Singh, Raj Kumar, Sugreev Kumar, Kuldeep Singh, Achhar Ram, Kulvinder Singh, Amarjit Singh and Jasvinder Singh. Standers-by — Deep Chand, Jagdeep Singh, Dharam Pal and Mahesh Kumar. Mr Gurmail Singh will be the coach.

Kho-kho (girls) — Anita Rani, Radha Rani, Anuradha, Veena Rani, Pooja Kumari, Harpal Kaur, Meenakshi, Bhupinder Kaur, Surinder Kaur, Ruby Rani, Amritpal Kaur and Renu Bala. Standers-by — Gagandeep Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Sunita Rani and Sita Rani. Ms Surinder Kaur will be the coach.

Hockey (boys) — Gurvinder Singh, Satvinder Singh, Raminder Singh, Gurjot Singh, Harinder Singh, Kamaljotpal Singh, Gurpartap Singh, Navdeep Singh, Paramjit Singh, Yogesh, Dupinder Singh, Baljit Singh, Harsimran, Sukhbir Singh, Gurdeep Singh and Harinder Singh and Mr Paramjit Singh will accompany the team as the coach.

Kabaddi (boys) — Pardeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Chamkaur Singh, Gursewak Singh, Gurmit Singh, Jagtar Singh, Inderjit Singh, Jarnail Singh, Veerpal Singh, Ranjit Singh and Dalbir Singh. Mr Devi Dyal will be the coach of the team.

Kabaddi (girls) — Manpreet Kaur, Manpreet Kaur, Pardeep Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Sukhvinder Kaur, Beant Kaur, Kirandeep, Kirandeep Kaur, Jasbir Kaur, Hardeep Kaur, Jagdeep Kaur and Samandeep Kaur. Mr Budh Singh will accompany the team as the coach.

Athletics (boys) — Lakhbir Singh, Rajinder Kumar, Mohammad Shamshad, Maninder Singh, Gurjodh Singh, Maninder Singh, Harpreet Singh, Darshan Singh, Amarjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Arjun Singh, Jaswant Singh and Kulbir Singh. Mr Harmeet Singh will accompany the team as the coach.

GNPS annual athletics meet begins

A large number of students got themselves registered for the two-day 27th Annual Athletics Meet of Guru Nanak Public School (GNPS), Sarabha Nagar, which began here today. These participants were divided into four houses namely- Bhagat Singh House, Bhai Veer Singh House, Prof Mohan Singh House and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Singh.

Mr Sumer Singh Gurjar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), inaugurated the meet and took slaute at an impressive march past. Prof Mohan Singh House won the best march past trophy.
