Freshers’ party held at DMCH Ludhiana, November 14 In her address, Ms Jasbir Kaur, Principal of the College, welcomed the freshers. Dr Daljit congratulated the students. Mr Amrit Nagpal said nursing was a noble profession. The cultural programme started with the number ‘Ayo re mharo dholna’. Nursing students presented a ‘DMC ke Doordarshan ke kamaal’. The main attraction was the fashion show-cum-Ms Fresher contest, in which at least 30 freshers
participated. Dressed in their best, they walked down the ramp with rhythmic music in the background. From western outfits to traditional Punjabi dresses, sarees and lehangas, the show included every colour of fashion. Ms Sukhjinder Kaur was declared Ms Fresher, Ms Shazia was first runner-up and Ms Sonia was second runner-up. Consolation prizes for good performance were given to Ms Raman and Ms Harpreet. The first-year students also gave a presentation on the dance number ‘Pairon mein bandhan hai’. They also presented a Punjabi dance number.The qawali also won applause. |

Folk songs, dances mark PAU youth fest Ludhiana, November 14 The programme began with a cultural procession in which students from each of the five colleges took a round of the campus in well-decked up trollies. The students dressed up in typical Punjabi attire, sang folk songs and presented folk dances throughout the procession. The trollies were decorated with phulkaris, charkhas and chattis to give a Punjabi ambience. The procession started from the flag post outside the College of Agriculture. Taking a round of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, College of Home Science, College of Veterinary Sciences, College of Agricultural Engineering and finally the Students’ Home, the procession concluded at the Open Air Theatre. Dr A.P.S. Mann, Director, Students’ Welfare and Dean of College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, welcomed the procession. Addressing the students, he appreciated their performance in the procession and wished them good luck for the cultural show. The show was formally inaugurated by Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice Chancellor of PAU. Following inauguration of the cultural programme, an individual folk song competition was started. Each of the five colleges was represented by two students. Avtar Singh of College of Veterinary Sciences sung ‘Chhala’ and Vyoma Aggarwal sung ‘Ratti teri ve dhol’. The judgement of the contest was made by Mr Mohammad Siddique, Mr Jassi Longowal and Ms Bal. For creative dance competition, each college had sent one entry. A student from each college performed dance on a recorded song. |
Textile painting, printing
exhibition on Ludhiana, November 14 Sobha Singh Arts College is celebrating the birthday of Padma Shree Sardar Sobha Singh, eminent artist, from November 14 to 16 from 11 am to 7 pm daily. The founder of the college, Prof NP Dhanda, said his association with Sobha Singh dated back to 1944. They were members of the Fine Arts Society of Government College, Lahore, in 1945. To perpetuate the memory of the great artist, Sobha Singh, he decided to name his college after the great artist so that people did not forget him like they had forgotten a famous artist, Sardar Thakur Singh, of Amritsar. Professor Dhanda, an octogenarian, has been teaching art for the past 63 years. Students of the college are displaying their exhibits of textile painting and printing on the college premises. Thirty students have displayed suits, shawls, bedsheets, bed covers, dining table sheets, quilt covers, saris, wall hangings, T-shirts, baby sheets, towels, hankies, ties, etc in myriad colours and patterns. Techniques used by the students included spray painting, dry brush touch, water painting, bold touching, embroidery, block printing, stencil work and screen painting. |
A treat for
special kids Ludhiana, November 14 Today, the students of Ek Prayas were invited by students of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School to celebrate the day. The presentation of a song, “Ai Malik tere bande ham,” by Ek Prayas students endeared them to the hearts of convent students. The students were treated to a programme presented by teachers of Sacred Heart. The tricks of a magician specially brought to entertain students thrilled them. Ms Samira Bector, president of the Social Action Group running Ek Prayas, thanked Sister Helima, Principal of the convent school, for giving the special students an opportunity to mix with normal students. In Aashirwad too, the atmosphere was of merry-making. The children were dressed in colourful costumes for participation in various dances. Ms Neelam Sodhi, president, said that the students are intelligent as their IQ levels are normal. With rehearsals and practice, they brought co-ordination in their dance steps. The teachers have taken great pains to teach them steps and their beaming smiles and obvious joy is reward enough. |
