Sporting community ecstatic over
Commonwealth Games

The sporting fraternity is ecstatic with the declaration that India is going to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It is only after the initial euphoria settles down that the organisers will get down to the business of preparing a blueprint of the actual plan.

It has prompted the country’s internationally acclaimed sportspersons to air their views on the promotion of sports. ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh, the only Indian athlete who won a gold medal in athletics in Commonwealth Games of 1958 at Cardiff (Wales) so far, spoke to this reporter from Jaipur. He said India had got a big opportunity to host the second-largest sports event of the world after Olympics and sincere efforts should be put in for making the games a success. The veteran athletes was of the view that core committees in each discipline should be formed.

The basic idea should be not only to become good host in terms of granting facilities and holding cultural shows, but on improving the performance of our sportspersons.

Ms Nirmal Milkha Singh, also a former international sportswoman, who was at her home in the city said the allotment of these games to India would usher a new era in terms of economic development of the country.

Kanwal Thakar Singh, a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in badminton, said: “It is a wonderful achievement for India. She hoped that India would organise the best-ever Commonwealth Games.

Deepak Thakur, one of India’s forward players in the present hockey team told on phone from Jalandhar that this was the right time for India to make all-out efforts for the cause of sports. He said several top-class sportspersons of the world were of the opinion that India had shown a remarkable improvement in sports. Deepak, who was one of the key members of the Indian Hockey Team that won the gold medal in Asia cup and Afro-Asian Games, said the Hyderabad games were also a testimony to the fact that India could host world-level competitions.

Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, the president of the Chandigarh Olympic Association, has hailed the allotment of the 2010 Commonwealth Games to India, Rana Sodhi, who was a member of the Commonwealth Games to India. Rana Sodhi, who was a member of the Commonwealth delegation from London, said Delhi would be the second city after Kuala Lumpur in Asia to host these games.

Cross-country, cycle races mark Children’s Day

Chandigarh, November 14
As part of the Children’s Day celebrations, students of Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, took part in an inter-house cycle race in junior as well as senior sections. More than 600 students showed great enthusiasm, zeal and discipline while taking part in the event.

In the senior school section, the Patiala House stood first with 6947 points, followed by the Tagore House in the second place with 6203 points. In Group A, comprising boys of Class X and above, Abhideep Singh (Tagore House) of Class X stood first, followed by Maheep (Aitchison House) of Class XI and Jai Sekhon (Patiala House).

In group B, comprising Classes VIII and IX, Harsimran (Aitchison House) of Class VII got first place while Navpreet (Nalagarh house) of VII bagged the second position and Simranpreet (Ranjit House) of VII was third.

In group C, comprising classes VI and VII, Karan Bir (Ranjit House) of Class VII Varinderjit (Ranjit House) of VII, and Gurpreet Singh (Tagore House) of Class VII were first, second and third, respectively. In group D, where girls of Class IX and above took part, Seonhe Oh (Patiala House) of Class IX-N was first, followed by Geetika (Patiala House) of Class IX-N and Kanwal-deep Kaur (Tagore House) bagged second and third, position, respectively. In group E, Harveen (Aitchi-son House) of Class VII, Jagman (Ranjit House) of VIII, Parneet (Ranjit House) of VII, clinched the first, second and third positions, respectively.

In the junior school category, Patiala House secured the first position, followed by Tagore House and Nalagarh House.

Shemrock School

Nearly 700 children of the Shemrock Group of Schools today celebrated Children’s Day with great fervour at Shemrock Senior Secondary School located in Sector 69, SAS Nagar. Children took part in a cross-country race to mark the occasion. After a small break, children showed their creativity by participating in a drawing competition. Mr Yashvir Mahajan, Additional Chief Administrator, PUDA, the chief guest gave away the prizes.

Puneet sets new meet record

Chandigarh, November 14
Puneet Rana of Chandigarh continued his winning spree on the second day of the All-India Inter-Varsity Swimming championship being held at the Panjab University swimming pool here today. Puneet won the gold medal in 200-metre breast stroke by clocking 2:35.34 seconds, which was a new meet record. Khan Juned of Pune was second while N.A. Krishan of VTU, Belgaum, was third.

In the 1500-metre freestyle event, Ankur Kanojia of Bangalore University was first while Rahul Batra of VTU, Belgaum was second. Varun Sethi of Delhi University was placed at third place. In 200-metre breast stroke in women section, Archana Bhushan of Bangalore secured the first position while Veena S of Bangalore was placed at second place. In 100-metre freestyle event for women, Remya V of Calicut bagged the first place while Meenakshi Tokas of Delhi secured the second place.

In waterpolo event, Bombay University, Mumbai, GND University, Amritsar, Kuruskshetra University and Panjab University, Chandigarh, won their respective matches.

Battlelines being drawn for Golf Club elections

Battlelines are being drawn for the Chandigarh Golf Club elections to be held most likely on December 20 or 21. The final date will be decided by the General Council of the club tomorrow.

A group of five golf club seniors got together on the terrace to announce their group which would fight the elections. Although Mr G.S. Sandhu, named as their presidential candidate was not present (he is in the USA), the five golf seniors claimed that they had persuaded him to contest for the president’s post. Those present included Dr G.S. Kochhar, Mr Gurmit Lehar “Laali”, Mr S.M.S. Sandhu, Col B.S. Kahlon and Mr Jyoti Matharu.

Talking on behalf of Mr S.S. Sandhu, two of the seniors Mr S.M.S. Sandhu and Dr Kochhar, said so far they had drawn up a list of nine candidates. They included names which had figured in the list of candidates fielded by Col A.S. Kumar as well Raja Malvinder Singh.

Of the remaining nine, Col J.S. Panag, Captain Gurdip Ghumman and Dr Vinny Sachdeva were out of town and could not talk to some of the newspersons who were at the club covering the Punjab Ladies Open Amateur Golf Championship.

According to Dr Kochhar Mr G.S. Sandhu would be returning in the third week of November.

Col A.P. Singh, who lost the presidential contest last year to Raja Malwinder Singh by seven votes, is yet to select his team.

The third candidate for the president’s post is a young senior advocate of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Rajeev Atmaram.

Though the elections are still five weeks away a lot of permutations and combinations are likely to be tried out before the final lists emerge.

Olympian Balbir admitted to PGI

Former hockey Olympian Balbir Singh has been admitted to the PGI after a severe asthmatic attack.

Mr Balbir Singh was a member of the Indian Hockey team that played in the 1948, 1952 and 1956 Olympics. He was rushed to the PGI yesterday after he complained of acute breathlessness. Doctors said his condition was improving.

Mr Balbir Singh has served as Director with the Punjab Sports Department.

MC must generate resources, says Verma

The Chandigarh Administration, it seems, would stick to its earlier stance of asking the Municipal Corporation to generate its own funds. The UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma (retd), said today the MC would have to generate its own resources. He was replying to queries by mediapersons as to what would the Chandigarh Administration do with regard to a move of the MC to reject the imposition of property tax in the city.

The Administrator was talking to reporters minutes after being present at the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with builders DLF at the UT Secretariat this afternoon.

In the past the Administration had rejected a resolution of the MC to reduce the rate of the property tax from 5 per cent to 2 per cent. The Administration had been asking the MC to impose the property tax on commercial as well as industrial buildings in the city. On Wednesday the MC had passed a resolution rejecting the imposition of the property tax.
