Trials for rural games

Ludhiana, October 31
Trials to select Punjab boys as well as girls teams in different disciplines will be conducted here at the Guru Nanak Stadium on November 3, according to a press note issued today by the District Sports Officer. The players will represent the state in the All India Rural Games from November 14 to 17 at Siliguri, West Bengal.

The Guru Nanak Stadium will be the venue of trials for four disciplines- football (boys), tug of war (boys), volleyball (boys and girls) and weightlifting (boys and girls). Players have been advised to report at the venue.

The note further said that the participants must be working or studying and residing in the rural areas for the past two years and they should not have taken part earlier in any open state or national-level competitions other than rural sports.

Muktsar college win: Riding high over fine batting display by Pushpinder (65 not out) and Prince (56), Government College, Muktsar, scored a thumping nine-wicket victory over RSD College, Ferozepore, in the inaugural match of the Panjab University ‘A’ Division Inter-college Cricket Championship which began at the GTB National College, Dakha, near here today.

Batting first after winning the toss, RSD College made 156 runs in 32.2 overs. The main scorers were Ajay (30), Manminder Singh (27) and Deepak (18). For Muktsar, Rajesh was the pick of bowlers who grabbed four wickets conceding 27 runs. Navneet and Ravinder scalped two victims each.

Government College, Muktsar, achieved the target without facing any resistance. They scored 160 for the loss of just one wicket after 23 overs. Pushpinder and Bharat remained unbeaten on 65 and 20 runs, respectively, while Prince contributed 56 runs. Earlier, Mr Amarjit Singh Grewal, Principal of the host college, inaugurated the meet.

Eves felicitated: Students of the local Government Polytechnic Institute for Women, Rishi Nagar, were honoured at a function held here yesterday. The function was organised to felicitate the students who excelled during the Punjab State Inter-Polytechnic Games that conducted here last week.

Competitions in seven disciplines were held and the students of the institute bagged three gold and as many silver medals in the meet. The gold medal winning teams were kabaddi, kho-kho and badminton, while the eves won silver medals in table tennis, handball and volleyball.
