Students, teachers receive awards

Ludhiana, October 30
Efforts of the students and teachers, who had been working hard to bring laurels at the district-level science competitions, were rewarded at the prize distribution function that marked the closing of the science fair at Ramgarhia Senior Secondary School for Boys, Millerganj, here today.

While the teachers had been competing for the extempore and teaching aids competitions, the students participated in quiz, chart making and science model exhibitions. The contests had been first conducted at the sub-divisional level and the top two winners then vied with each other at the district-level contests for the past two days. The first prize winners in each of the contests would now move for the state-level competition, the venue and schedule of which is yet to be decided.

Mr Bachitar Singh, District Education Officer (Secondary), was the chief guest. Mr Varinder Sharma, District Science Supervisor, was the chief coordinator of the fair. The science teachers from government, affiliated and private schools attended the prize distribution function.

The results of the contests for teachers are:

38 students receive prizes

Thirtyeight students received prizes during the annual day celebrations of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, Punjab Agricultural University, here today. Awards of honour in academics, sports and cultural events were given to the students from each of the 11 departments in the college on the occasion. For attaining the highest marks in their departments, 11 postgraduate students received awards. These included Payal Sharma from biochemistry, Navjyot Kaur from botany, Gagandeep Kaur from business management, Gurpreet Kaur from chemistry, Sangeeta Verma from economics, Sandeep Soodan from fisheries, Pooja Grover from genetics, Maryada Sharma from micro-biology, Puja from physics, Puneet Kaur from zoology and Rashmi Jain from journalism.

Awards of honour for achievements in academics and research were given to six students. Randeep Kaur Sandhar was honoured for getting the Young Scientist Award at Punjab Science Congress held this year. Anu Kalia from the Department of Microbiology was honoured for getting Dr Sukhdev Singh prize for essay and oration. Harvinder Kaur and Shikha Arpan were honoured for bagging the best poster awards at the Socio-Biological Chemists Congress. Pooja Rana was felicitated for getting the best poster award in Satellite Symposium this year. Ritu Manaktala was honoured for receiving the best poster award in the Punjab Science Congress.

Certificates of merit for the session 2002-2003 were given to the top three winners of elocution and extempore competitions. In elocution, the first prize went to Jyotsana Attri from journalism, second prize was received by Nidhi Arora from business management and third prize went to Indupreet Kaur from economics. In extempore, Shreya Bhardwaj, Jyotsana Attri and Nidhi Bhatia won the first, second and third prizes, respectively.

Awards of honour in sports and cultural activities were given to seven students. Ramandeep Singh Sohi won the award for his achievement in hockey. For quiz, Zahid Nadeem and Amit Sikka from business management were awarded. Amandeep Kaur won prize for excellence in dance. Neha Jain received award for literary achievements. Jyotsana Attri was awarded for achievements in literary and fine arts events. Kanan Kapil won prize for poetry and music activities.

The college merit certificates for the year 2002-03 were also bestowed during the function. Shobit Dhingra received certificates for participation in badminton and cricket. For dramatics, Meenu Ghai and Gur Rajneesh were given certificates. Kushal Bhalla and Satnam Singh were honoured for participation in music activities.

In inter-departmental cultural competitions, the first position went to the Department of Botany, second to the Department of Biochemistry and chemistry, and third prize was given to the Department of Economics.

The most-coveted Best Student Award in academics was given to Sudha Prasad. The Best Student Award in sports and culture went to Balbir Kaur. Dr A.P.S. Mann, Dean of the college, was the chief guest at the function.

GNIMT students shine in BBA results

Nidhi Singla, Ritu Monga and Savneet Kaur, three students of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, have shown commendable performance in BBA (sixth semester) examinations conducted by Punjab Technical University this year.

In a merit list declared by the university recently, GNIMT students have bagged three positions among the top 10 position holders. In BBA (sixth semester), the students got second, third and fifth positions. Nidhi Singla secured second position in the university with 88.2 per cent marks. She was followed by Ritu Monga at the third place with 88 per cent marks. Savneet Kaur bagged fifth position in the university with 87.2 per cent marks.

Even in BBA second semester examination, GNIMT students bagged two positions among the top 10 positions in the university. Vaishali Khattar of GNIMT bagged seventh position in the university with 80.7 per cent marks. Catherine was placed ninth in the merit list with 79.3 per cent marks. In BBA fourth semester, Preeti Sachdeva of GNIMT bagged ninth position in the university with 80.7 per cent marks.

Dr A.S. Bansal, Director of the GNIMT, has appreciated the performance of the students. He said the GNIMT students had always strived to achieve good results not only in academics but also in the field of sports, cultural and literary activities. This had been made possible only due to the conducive environment that had been provided to the students to facilitate their all round personality development.

Honour for Prof Kapoor

Prof Prithipal Singh Kapoor, former Pro Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, has been nominated member of the academic council of Vishav Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore, for a period of three years.

Prof Kapoor is a Sikh scholar and an academic of repute. He has served as Director, Text Book Board, Punjab, and Editor-in-Chief, Encyclopaedia of Sikhism, at Punjabi University and Principal of various government and private educational institutions of the state for more than 15 years. His last stint as Principal was with the Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Ludhiana. He has written more than 20 research articles and books.

Seminar on self-motivation

A two-day seminar on ‘Motivation of self’ and ‘How to become a professional’ concluded at the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, here today.

The Principal of the college, Dr Anup Kaur Bansal, presided over the seminar. Dr Harpreet Singh from Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology addressed BCom students on the said topics. He also told them about various career options.

He said self-motivation and self-empowerment could lead to success in life. He stressed the need for self-orientation rather than selfishness. According to him, communicating with one’s self can help one in understanding one’s latent talents. Life should be looked at as an opportunity to prove one’s potential. Psychological fitness is equally important as physical fitness to overcome failure and stress in this competitive world, he said.

On the second day, Dr Harpreet Singh gave tips to the students on how to develop a professional attitude.

Seminar on bureaucracy

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, organised a seminar on “Bureaucracy in democratic political system” here today.

Dr Anoop Kaur Bansal, Principal of the college, welcomed Dr H.S. Deol, former member of the PPSC, PSEB, National Integration Chair at Punjabi University, Patiala, and Minority Language Commission, Government of India. Dr Deol talked about the participation and involvement of bureaucrats in democratic political system and also about its weaknesses.

He said bureaucrats and political system should be impartial, natural and loyal towards their duties and obligations.

Judicial remand for Improvement Trust employees

Ludhiana, October 30
Mr Arunvir Vashisht, Chief Judicial Magistrate, today remanded the six employees of the Improvement Trust, Chander Kanta, Balbir Ram, Harjit Singh, Pritam Singh, Malkiat Kaur and Krishan Lal into judicial custody till November 13.

They were arrested in two different cases by the Vigilance Bureau on the charge of committing fraud.

The court also sent one professor, Narinder Kaur and his wife Rama Sharma, into judicial custody, who were arrested on the charges of committing fraud in connivance with the trust employees.

Cultural contests from Nov 17

Ludhiana, October 30
The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will hold state-level cultural, fine arts, literary and sports contests at four schools of Ludhiana from November 17 to 19. The board had earlier organised district-level contests in September. Top two winners group events and top three winners of individual events had then competed for various events at the four zonal- level competitions that concluded recently. The top three winners of each group and individual events will now compete in the state-level competition.

The main venue of the contest will be Ramgarhia Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Millerganj, where 10 events including painting, giddha, calligraphy, creative writing, one-act play, gatka, tug-of-war pithu garam and stapu will be conducted. The second venue will be Smt Satyawati Oswal Senior Secondary School, Millerganj, where contests in bhangra and declamation will be conducted.

The third venue will be Guru Nanak Girls’ Khalsa School, Gujjarkhan Campus, where contests for kavishri and vaar singing will be held. At Guru Harkrishan Public School, Dugri, there will be contests for shabad singing and folk song competitions.

The contests for the students of Classes I to IV will be held on November 17. On the second day, students of Classes V to VIII will take part in the competitions. The contests for the students of higher classes will be held on November 19.
