All set for skating championship
Geetanjali Gayatri
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 30
With competitiveness and conviction writ large on their faces, skaters from various schools of India got into business mode, here today, beginning their practice session as soon as they set foot on the venue. The rink at the host school, Kailash Bahl DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, beckoned and the wheels rolled as students indulged in the sport.

Working away at perfecting their performance at the rink, the students said the championship had also provided them an opportunity to forge new relationships and friendships during the four days of their stay in the city.

From the Army School at Jammu, Shivika, said just being in a peaceful setting was inspiration enough to perform well. “Ever since I have come, I am focussing entirely on skating, getting used to the rink. It feels good to be representing a state in the news for all the wrong reasons,” she added.

Anxious before the championship, Jai Singh Rana of Emerald High School, Indore, is awaiting the inaugural ceremony. “Once the contest begins, anxiety gives way to performing well, making it the only aim. Even if you are not a winner, it contributes to the sport and, is always, a great learning experience,” he remarks.

On her maiden visit to the city, Gayatri Devi from Pimpaly Secondary School, Vishakhapatnam, is impressed with whatever little she has seen of the city. “For now, I am focussed on my performance since I have stiff competition. However, I would definitely like to go around the city before bidding it goodbye,” she says between skillfully meandering her way through the skaters at the rink.

Hosting the Fourth CBSE Roller Skating Championship for the second time the school, too, is decked up for the festivities, rolling out a red carpet for its special guests with the Principal, Ms Madhu Bahl, supervising all arrangements.

Most students would be housed in the school building which has been vacated to accommodate them. Two teachers have been put on duty in each room to ensure that the guests feel at home all through their stay.

In keeping with the spirit of camaraderie that was all-pervasive at the school campus buzzing with activity, the authorities have finalised a menu to cater to all tastes. “We have set up a mess and asked the caterer to prepare different kinds of dishes with special emphasis on cooking of South Indian food.

While the menu is elaborate and boasts of a lot of variety, we will modify it in keeping with the taste of the children. We are trying to give the students a good time in the city,” Ms Bahl informed.

For the entertainment of the participants, the students of the host school will present a cultural programme after the events are over while a campfire programme will be organised on the last night of their stay where participants from all states would be invited to perform.
