Digvijay Singh shoots 68 to lead at HT Pro Golf
Our Sports Reporter

Gurgaon, October 28
The third edition of HT Pro golf championship promises to be an interesting fare as Digvijay Singh shot a bogey-free round of four-under 68 to lead in the opening round at the Classic Golf Resort, near Delhi today. As many as three professionals - Rahil Gangjee, Gaurav Ghei and Mukesh Kumar were breathing down the leader’s neck with just a stroke behind.

This is the seventh leg of the Hero Honda Indian golf tour and the first of the Northern Swing. With just a little more than a week left for the mega event on Indian soil- the Hero Honda Masters 2003, an event on the Asian PGA, it was a sort of warm-up for the professionals here.

Defending champion SSP Chowrasia, Shiv Prakash and Amit Dube were tied for the fifth spot with a two-under 70. Vijay Kumar, Uttam Singh Munday, Ashok Kumar and Pappan shared the eighth spot with a total of 71.

Digvijay Singh who returned from playing the APGA event - the Sanya Open in China, only hours before teeing off did not show any signs of jet lag till he finished his round. Beginning from the 10th, he made a birdie each on the opening and closing holes of his front nine. The 31-year-old who will be playing the World Cup of Golf in the US early next month, added one more birdie on the sixth before signing off with yet another birdie.

The pro from Meerut could have ended up with a better score but for the birdies missed from small distances on at least four occasions. A 25-footer on the sixth was the pick of his birdies. “It was after the round that I felt a stiff back and was fired. A good sleep, and I will be ready,” said a Digvijay, who had just 25 putts for the day.

Meanwhile, Gaurav Ghei, who will partner Digvijay at the World Cup of Golf, opened his birdie count with successive birdies on third and fourth and followed up with a similar act on the 14th and 15th. The birdie on the latter was his best shot. After a good drive, the 34year-old pro was left of the bunker from where he had a difficult shot to hit. He not only stopped the ball on the fast sloping green but also holed a 10-footer for a birdie.
