India in grip of deadly diabetes
Chandigarh, October 28 These are some of the startling figures revealed by Dr Ashok Jhingan, a leading physician and Chairman of a Delhi-based diabetes research centre, in an interaction with TNS. “Diabetes is the single most important disease, which can affect nearly every organ system in the body. Reasons for increase in cases of diabetes, include changes in lifestyle, people living longer than before (ageing) and low birth weight.” According to him, there are two types of diabetes, namely Type 1: Here the body stops producing insulin completely. This type of diabetes most often affects juveniles or young adults. These individuals, therefore, have to take insulin injections on a daily basis. Children as young as three years have been found to be affected with Type 1diabetes. In Type 2 diabetes, though the body produces insulin, it is not enough to properly convert food to energy. This form of diabetes occurs mostly in people over 40 years of age. Typical symptoms of diabetes include: excessive thirst and hunger, weakness and lethargy, delayed wound healing, frequent urination, weight loss and blurred vision. Most patients with Type 1 diabetes need to be injected with insulin daily, as their body does not produce insulin at all. There are different types of insulin for different situations and lifestyles. Patients with Type 2 diabetes may need to take insulin for a short period and then continue with oral tablets. Regular medical checkup is the key to treatment as apart from the actual disease itself, the complications that come along with it can lead to blindness, kidney failure, cardio vascular diseases, brain stroke and limbs gangrene. His tips for diabetes management are: Meals should be eaten at regular times each day. Food high in sugar, saturated fats and cholesterol should be avoided completely. One should consume fresh vegetables, salads regularly and one can also include lean chicken and fish in daily diet. Regular daily exercise plays an important part in diabetes control. It helps to utilise glucose effectively and also relieves stress. Weight loss and a fit boy can help improve diabetic condition. Diabetes is the leading cause of loss of vision. Patients could also suffer from retinopathy, a state where tiny blood vessels in the eye leak causing damage to the retina. Regular eye check up too is important as many of the conditions can be reversed in the early stages on detection. Good oral hygiene is very important in diabetics. One should brush and floss after every meal and before bedtime and also take care to avoid food which sticks to the teeth. A regular visit to the dentist for check-ups is also important. One should always carry extra supplies of insulin strips, syringes, swabs, blood testing and urine testing equipment and motion sickness pills. On long drives one should keep snacks and water handy. |

Administration launches drive against sales tax evasion
Chandigarh, October 28 Meanwhile, action has been initiated action against some gold jewellery traders in the city in Mani Majra by the department. Further, the Chandigarh Administration has launched an extensive campaign to check sales tax evasion. When contacted, Mr Arun Kumar, Deputy Commissioner and Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Chandigarh, today disclosed that teams had been constituted to monitor the sales in the major markets and to initiate action against the tax evaders. He said, “There is a quantum jump in sales in the market this year. We are aware of the fact that despite increase in sales tax collections, a section of the traders especially in the unorganised sector is indulging in sales tax evasion.” The officials added that some of the fireworks and other traders who had purchased goods from other towns, were already under scanner. We are making efforts to bring maximum number of traders under the tax net. The department has also decided to look into the distribution of coupons to judge the sales. Mr Arun Kumar admitted that all traders were not issuing proper receipts to the customers especially during the festival season. They were not showing the records of actual sales in their account books. He claimed that like the Department of Income Tax, the Excise and Taxation Department would also keep an eye on the traders. The number of coupons issued to customers could be one of the parameters to judge actual sales in the market. Other officials in the department disclosed that as per the Sales Tax Act, the traders were supposed to pay sales tax and surcharge on all major items sold during festival season. These include dry fruits (4.4 per cent), readymade garments (4.4 per cent), utensils and kitchenware (4.4 per cent), electronic goods ( 8.8 per cent), leather suitcases (13.10 per cent), milk products (8.8 per cent), footwear (8.8 per cent), plastic items (8.8 per cent), fire works ( 13.10 per cent), stainless articles (13.10 per cent), gold jewellery (1.1 per cent) and silk fabrics ( 13.10 per cent). Enquiries made to the traders in the major markets like Sectors 17, 22, 19 and 35 and customers revealed that the sale of jewellery, dry fruits, milk products, utensils, crockery, footwear, readymade garments and other electrical and electronic goods could be worth over Rs 70 to 80 crore in the past few days only. But there were large number of shopkeepers who had not paid proper receipts in the name of rush. A trader in Sector 17 said, “We did not have time to give receipts neither did the customers ask for it. However, we enter all these sales into account books at night before closing the shops.” The traders, however, denied the allegations of sales tax evasion. |
