Faridabad emerges as neutral venue for ODIs
A. Gulati

Rohtak, October 27
Australia will take on New Zealand in a one-day international of the triangular series on October 29 at Faridabad’s Nahar Singh Stadium. This would be the seventh ODI to be staged at this venue.

New Zealand would become the sixth team after West Indies, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Australia to figure in an ODI at this venue. South Africa and West Indies have earned a cent percent victory percentage at this venue, having won all the matches played by them on Nahar Singh Stadium. Playing record of each of the five teams having appeared at this venue in ODIs is as under:

Faridabad would serve as ‘neutral venue’ of ODIs for the second time. Earlier, South Africa and Australia have played here in 1996 during Titan Cup tourney.

The highest score at this venue is 277 for 9 scored in 49.4 overs by Zimbabwe against India in 2001-2002, whereas the lowest score at this venue was recorded by India in 1994-95, when they were all out against West Indies at 177 in 45 overs of play.

Only one individual three-figure knock has been played at this venue so far. India’s Mohinder Amarnath has the distinction of achieving this feat in the first ever ODI held in 1987-88. He scored exactly 100 runs while playing against West Indies.

A century partnership has been reached on four occasions at Nahar Singh Stadium. Caribbean batsmen P V Simmons and S C Williams scored 132 runs against India in 1994-95, for the first wicket.

In 1987-88, P V Simmons was associated in 108 runs partnership for the second wicket with R B Richardson for West Indies against India. Zimbabwean pair of A D R Campbell and Andrew Flower added 111 runs for the third wicket against India in 2001-02. Gary Kirsten and Hensie Cronje went on to add 113 runs for South Africa against India in 1999-2000 for the fourth wicket.

Bagging four wickets in an innings remains the ultimate feat for a bowler at this venue. This incident has occurred four times at Faridabad.

In 1996-97 Alan Donald had dismissed four Australians. His feat was equalled by Australia’s-Paul Reiffel in the same match, when he dismissed four South Africans after giving away 35 runs. India’s Zaheer Khan (4 for 47 in 2001-2002) and Sachin Tendulkar (4 for 56 in 1999-2000) against Zimbabwe and South Africa respectively, are the other bowlers to get four wickets in an innings of a ODI played at Nahar Singh Stadium.
