Enforcement staff ‘forces’ penalties on shopkeepers
Receipts issued saying it is for festival

It seems that taking a bribe is now routine thing in the Municipal Corporation. The enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation resorted to forcible collection of lakhs of rupees from shopkeepers in the name of Divali and even issued receipts for the same saying the money had been collected on account of the Festival.

Befriending co-passengers and naive people in trains and on railway stations in the city, Ambala, Ludhiana and Kalka, before drugging and looting them, brought in quick money for two unemployed youth on a number of occasions but eventually landed them behind bars.

Divali sales in city over Rs 100 cr

“We had never expected such a heavy rush of customers on Divali. The response from them has been unprecedented. Not only city residents, but also customers from all over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and even Jammu and Kashmir have thronged the city markets,” said Mr Arvind Jain, president, Shopkeepers’ Association of Sector 22.

SC grants bail to N.K. Jain

Former UT Home Secretary, N.K Jain was today granted bail by the Supreme Court in a case pertaining to his alleged involvement in the rape of a Shimla girl. Mr Jain was arrested by the UT police on the charge of hatching a conspiracy to implicate a city-based businessman, Mr M.K. Jain, in the case.

RSS chief mourns ex-Chief Justice’s death
Chandigarh, October 27
Mr K.S. Sudharshan, chief of the RSS, has condoled the death of a former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Jitender Vir Gupta, who was the president of the Northern Zone unit of the RSS. The former Chief Justice died on October 25.

Sculpting image of cooperation

Uniting the finer points of North and South Indian art of sculpting, 30 students from the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, and Government College of Arts, Chandigarh, are working hard to give shape to their dream project — a 18-feet Stucco sculpture at the gate of the college in Sector 10 which will immortalise the first students exchange programme carried out by the local Government College of Arts.
