Award for acupressure specialist

Dr Attar Singh, an acupressure specialist, will be honoured with Bhaskar Award by the Bharat Nirman in New Delhi on November 22 for his contribution in the field of nature cure, a press note said here today.

The Bharat Nirman (Build India), a national-level organisation, has so far honoured over 100 persons from different walks of life. Dr Attar Singh has worked for making nature cure more popular through his books in Hindi and Punjabi.

VRV Singh selected for under-19 team

VRV Singh, a trainee of the DAV Cricket Coaching Centre, Sector 8 has been picked up for the Indian Under-19 cricket team that will take part in the World Under-19 cricket meet. Hailing the proud achievements of his trainee, the Sports Authority of India cricket coach, Mr Sukhwinder Bawa, said it all began from the time of Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Mongia and this centre has been contributing regularly to the national under-19 team. Mr Bawa said, VRV Singh had been performing consistently over a period of time and his fast bowling had won him several honours. Only recently he touched a speed of 134 kmph as judged by the ESPN fast bowler contest held last month and he was a treat to watch. He became the fastest bowler in this contest where more than 2,000 youngsters took part.

Tennis tourney

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, outplayed SD Public School, Sector 32, 2-1 in the UT Inter-School Tennis Tournament played here today at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16. Third position was won by Bhawan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, team that defeated Sri Guru Harkishan Public School, Sector 20 team.

Appointment hailed

The Physical Education Teacher Welfare Association, Chandigarh, in a statement today hailed the nomination of Mr Prem Puri, Assistant Education Officer, UT as Vice- President of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). Mr Balwinder Singh, general secretary of the association, said UT can now hope to get a boost in school sports.

Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, won its matches in both under-17 and under-19 categories in the UT Inter-school Volleyball Tournament for boys being played at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 18. GSSS-27 beat Government High School, Sector 41 (25-18, 25-21) in under-17 category DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 (25-09 25-18) in the under-19 category.

Other results are: under 17: Government High School-26 beat Government Model Senior Secondary School-23 (25-22, 25-23); Government Model High School 20 (Basic) beat Government Model High School Sector-29 (25-17, 25-05); Government Model High School Sector-26 beat GHS, Sarangpur 25-07, 25-03; Sri Guru Gobind Singh School, Sector-35 beat Government High School, Mauli Colony 25-11, 25-17; and St Stephen’s-45 beat GHS-22 (25-20,25-11).

Under-19: Government Senior Secondary School Sector-37 beat Sri Guru Gobind Singh School Sector-35 (25-17, 25-13,); SDP-32 b GMSS-44 (25-14,25-06); GMSSS-23 b MRASS-27 (25-15,25-08); GMSSS-16 b GMSS-22 (25-20,25-11).

TT tournament

DAV Public School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, will play host to the CBSE Cluster XI Table Tennis tournament beginning tomorrow at TT Hall, Sector 23. As many as 25 teams from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and parts of Punjab will vie for top honours in this two-day meet which will have team championship in both boys and girls section.

Rajdeep’s performance

A rich haul of five wickets for just five runs, by Rajdeep Singh who claimed five wickets for five runs, enabled Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20 to win by two wickets in the Shivalik trophy match played here today.

In another match played today, a superb performance by Raj Angad who scored unbeaten 27 runs and bagged three wickets for 15 runs helped Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35 in beating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, by eight wickets.

Fire cess on commercial buildings soon

Owners and occupiers of commercial buildings in the city will now have to pay a fire cess. Orders to this effect were passed by the Chandigarh Administration today and the rules will come into force within two months.

On buildings, godowns and shops where the inflammable material is stored. It will be 10 per cent of the house tax assessed on these buildings per annum on other shops and factories it will be 5 per cent of the house tax assessed on these buildings per annum while in case of high rise buildings having height of 36 feet or above it will be 2 per cent of house tax assessed on these buildings per annum.

Move to levy tariff on water

The Chandigarh Administration today said domestic tariff would be levied on water in residential buildings, where residential area of the building has been allowed for the installation of STD/PCO/fax or photostat machine. The permitted area will be 20 per cent of the covered area.

A draft has been prepared for amendment to the Chandigarh Water Supply Byelaws. This draft will be taken into consideration after the expiry of a period of 10 days from the date of publication of this notification in the official gazette. Members of the public can sent objections or suggestions.
