Water-borne diseases grip Noida while officials sit pretty
Our Correspondent

Noida, October 15
People are falling prey to water-borne diseases in Noida every day. However, the authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to the menace. The victims are mostly residents of Sector-62, 61 and 56.

More than 1,500 families live in the co-operative housing societies of the public sector undertakings like Hindustan Fertilizer, NTPC, BHEL and Indian Oil.

Overflowing septic tanks, cracked water pipes, inadequate drainage, have become a fact of life in the area. Strewn with sewage and discarded vegetables, the stench in these areas is appalling.

The place has turned into a veritable breeding place for mosquitoes. People are exposed to the diseases like malaria, dengue and viral fever.

Many leading doctors express their fears: “The spread of dengue is attributed to expanding geographic distribution of the four dengue viruses and of their mosquito vectors, the most important of which is the predominantly urban species aedes aegypti.”

A rapid influx in the urban population is bringing over greater number of people into contact with this vector, especially in the areas favourable for breeding of mosquitoes.

In the household where water storage is common and where solid waste disposal services are inadequate, dengue viruses are transmitted to humans through bites of infective female aedes mosquitoes.

“Mosquitoes generally acquire the virus while feeding on the blood of an infected person,” explained Dr Ajay Agarwal of NMC.

The residents of Sector-62 lament at the overflowing drains. “We knew that after the monsoon, the dengue threat would loom large. The parks are water-logged and the sewage is overflowing. The mosquitoes have invaded us, but the Noida administration has taken no action despite the repeated complaints,” the residents complained.

They said that because of massive construction taking place in their area, there is a lot of filth and construction material lying around. This attracts the pests. There are no cleaners or sweepers appointed by the authority and as such no cleaning takes place regularly.

V Ashta, secretary RWA, Sector-62 says, “Residential block B-9 and C-58 have continued to remain water-logged after the rains. The drains are full of stagnant water. These areas have become prolific breeding grounds for the mosquitoes. All kinds of refuse, pumped out sewage and dead bodies of rodents have been putrefying and emitting a foul stench. There is algae growth everywhere.”
