Salaam Baalak retain Kutumb soccer title

New Delhi, October 13
Salaam Baalak Trust defeated Yuvati to retain the ‘Goal of Life’ Football Tournament for streetchildren under 14 years of age, organised by the Kutumb Foundation, at the Raghubir Singh Modern School ground.

Raju Thapa of Salaam Baalak Trust was adjudged the best player of the tournament. Salaam Baalak Trust, Kutumb, Yuvati and Butterflies had earlier made it into the semi-finals.

There was a carnival atmosphere at the Junior Modern School ground as the street children got an opportunity to display the many facets of their talent, including soccer skills, as an appreciate crowd gave them encouraging nods. Teams representing 16 NGOs participated in the tournament.

The two-day competition also featured painting and other skills of the streetchildren. Prominent NGOs like Prayas, Manzil, Balashram and prominent public schools like Raghubir Singh Junior Modern, Springdales and Mata Jai Kaur participated in the competitions.

Hosts Kutumb in association with Katha, Karm Marg, Anubhav and Vidya also put on show a captivating cultural performance.

The programme began with a one-act play enacted by children of Indradhanush, the flagship programme of the Kutumb Foundation. The play was based on a Bengali story and was very well-received by an appreciative audience.

Several sponsors like Lakhani Shoes, Crayola, Knight Queen Mosquito Coils, the American Soyabean Association, Brindavan Health Foods and Pepsi readily came forward to pitch in with sponsorships for this noble venture.

President of the Kutumb Foundation Kapil Pandey said: “We are working towards giving the streetchildren a chance to be in the mainstream and strongly believe that the age of 10-14 years is the right age to mould children into responsible citizens who can support their families.”

He said the Kutumb family was very satisfied with the overwhelming response to its venture.

“We are excited to see more and more children participating in this event,” added Mr Kapil Pandey.

Ganga School down Modern in CBSE hockey

New Delhi, October 13
Ganga International School defeated Modern School, Barakhamba Road 3-1 in the under-19 section of the opening match of the North Zone Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Hockey Tournament at the Ganga School ground. Praveen, Pradeep and Anoop scored for the winners.

In other matches, Blue Bells defeated DAV School, Rohini 3-0, Guru Teg Bahadur School beat Modern School, Barakhamba Road 3-0 and APJ, Jalandhar School beat Guru Nanak Foundation School, Patiala 5-0 in the under-14 group.

Former hockey Olympian Ashok Kumar inaugurated the tournament. Deputy director of West Zone Daljeet Kaur, CBSE OSD Pushker Vora, Ganga School manager Sushil Kumar Gupta, principal H. Srow and director of sports O. P. Malhotra were also present.

Netesh Bajaj hattrics for Talkatora Rink

A breath-taking performance by Netesh Bajaj, who slotted in a hattrick, was the highlight of Talkatora Skating Rink’s 4-0 victory against Father Agnel School in the 12th Delhi State Inter-School Roller Skating Championship at the Talkatora Skating Rink on Monday.

In other matches, Hansraj Model School defeated Doon School, Paschim Vihar 4-0 and Siri Fort Sports Complex beat Ryan International School 5-2.

In the individual section, gold medals were annexed by Shyam, Gumesh, Yukit, Raveena, Sumit, Sanjit, Avinav, Rohit, Harjapati and Nishant.

Dhani Ram win

Dhani Ram School trounced President’s Estate 8-0 and Cambridge School beat Frank Anthony 1-0 in the Nivia Schools Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.

Polo calendar

The Delhi Fall Polo Season will begin on November 2 with an exhibition match. The matches will be played at the Army Equestrian Centre ground, Delhi Cantt and the Jaipur Polo ground.

The following tournaments will be held this season: Maharaja Sir Pratap Singh Cup, Ratanda Cup, Army Championship, Maharaja Prithvi Singh Cup, IPA Championship, Field Marshal Cariappa Cup, Maharaja Hari Singh Memorial Cup, Cavalry Gold Cup, Baria Cup, Baroda Cup and the Bhopal-Pataudi Cup.

Ganga judo squad

Eight judokas of Ganga School will represent Delhi in the CBSE National Judo Championship to be held in Chennai from October 16 to 18.

The players are: Kudrat Yadav, Savita, Mamta Lakra, Narender, Sandeep, Manjeet Lakra, Dharamvir and Krishan. Reshmi will be the manager and Santosh Rajput will be the coach.

Raman Sachdeva stars in Salwan’s win

New Delhi, October 13
An unbeaten knock of 86, studded with eight boundaries and three huge sixes, by Raman Sachdeva enabled Salwan Public School, Rajender Nagar defeat Modern School, Barakhamba Road by seven wickets in a league match of the fourth Parle Cup Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Salwan School ground. Raman was named the man of the match.

Scores: Modern School: 147 all out in 40 overs (Ankit Lamba 38, Ankur Arora 2 for 24, Mohit Negi 2 for 32). Salwan Public: 151 for 3 in 26.2 overs (Raman Sachdeva 86 n o, Amit Bola 26 n o).

Ravindra, DAV win

An unbeaten knock of 53 by Harish Kumar and deadly bowling of 3 for 30 by Pankaj Sethi helped Ravinder Public School beat K N Colts by six wickets in the DDCA Under-17 Cricket Tournament. Scores: K N Colts: 187 for 8 in 45 overs (Ritesh Sinha 37, Surender Bansal 30 n o, Pankaj Sethi 3 for 30). Ravindra School: 188 for 4 in 38 overs (Tushar Alekar 42, Harish Kumar 53).

Brilliant wicket-keeping by Rajat Jain, who took four catches and effected two stumpings, and deadly bowling of 3 for 20 by Abhishek Sakuja helped DAV, Shalimarbagh defeat Century Club by nine wickets.

Scores: Century: 69 all out in 30.3 overs (Abhishek Sakuja 3 for 20, Saurabh Jain 2 for 10, Pawan Chouhan 2 for 2). DAV, Shalimarbagh: 70 for 1 in 14.3 overs (Luv Shehrawat 26, Pawan Chouhan 19 n o).

Associates beat Tata

Associates defeated Tata AIG by eight wickets in the Turf Twenty20 Cup Cricket Tournament at the Jamia ground.

Scores: Tata AIG: 122 for 8 in 20 overs (Mridul 25, Sajid Kadari 39, Vishal Wale 2 for 15). Associates: 123 for 2 in 18 overs (Nitin 57 n o, Javed Khan 15 n o, Sudhanshu Pokhriyal 2 for 27).

Frank Anthony win

Frank Anthony defeated Shri Ram School by 20 runs in the Shri Ram Cricket Challenge.

Scores: Frank Anthony: 142 in 35 overs (Vijay Pandit 28, Dheeraj Gupta 23, Kabir Bose 3 for 27, Aftab Bose 2 for 14). Shri Ram School: 122 (Aftab Lal 44, Sarthak 4 for 6). In another match, St. Columba’s defeated Mount St. Mary’s School by 63 runs. Scores: St. Columba’s: 190 (Victor Wilkinf 80, Shivam 37, Pargat Singh 2 for 37). SGNP Girls School, Shahabad defeated DRP National School, Chhatisgarh 11-0, Sanjay Gandhi Vidyapeeth, Gandhinagar defeated St. Annes School, Pune 17-0, Govt. Bhoj Girls School, Dhar beat Loyala School, Kohima 4-0 and Karamat Hussain Inter-College, Lucknow beat Govt. Dhruv Arora rallies to beat Rajat Kumar

Dhruv Arora, down by two games, hit back to defeat Rajat Kumar 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 16-14 in the sub-junior section of the 16th Jaspal Kaur Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament at the school premises.

In the boys section, Aman Ahuja defeated Jasdeep Singh 12-10, 10-12, 8-11, 12-10, 12-10 to enter the quarter-final.
