Exam not held due to Pak shelling

Srinagar, October 13
The matriculation examination, currently being held across the Kashmir valley, could not be held in the border town of Gurez of Baramula district today following intense Pakistani shelling, official sources said.

Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate shelling in the sector this morning, causing panic among the villagers residing close to the Line of Control.

The shelling forced people to take shelter in underground bunkers built by the government.

The villagers did not venture out as the shelling continued throughout the day, disrupting normal life. A number of shells hit the Gurez township, but there was no immediate report of any casualty from anywhere in the sector.

As students and examiners did not turn up at the examination halls, the exam could not be held today and is expected to take place later, the sources said.

Troops guarding the border fired in retaliation to silence Pakistani guns and also intensified vigil to foil any possible infiltration attempt by Pakistan-trained militants. — PTI

Srinagar, October 13
The Jammu and Kashmir Government will set up a national fruit market at a cost of Rs 17 crore in north Kashmir apple-town of Sopore to promote horticulture in the state.

The Sopore fruit mandi will be developed into a national fruit market and Rs 17 crore is being spent for the purpose, state Agriculture Minister Abdul Aziz Zargar told a gathering of fruit growers and traders at the launch of Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) at Sopore last evening.

Mr Zargar said fruit markets would also be set up at Kolkata and Mumbai to provide better marketing choice to fruit growers and traders.

Launching the MIS by flagging off a truckload of C-grade apples procured from fruit growers, the minister said eight procurement centres had been set up under the scheme.

The coalition government had accorded top priority to the development of the horticulture sector and a comprehensive programme was being formulated to create assured irrigation infrastructure to promote fruit industry, he said.

A distinct trademark would also be created to establish the credibility of Kashmiri fruit in the world market, he said.

Pointing out that Rs 100 crore technology mission for development of horticulture had been sactioned by the Centre, he asked the fruit growers to take full advantage of the scheme and avail benefits under the agri expo zone for apple and walnut.
