GMCH to have new Medical Supdt

The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, will soon have a regular Professor of Hospital Administration-cum-Medical Superintendent. The Union Public Service Commission had held an interview for the post last week.

According to sources, besides this the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meeting organised by the UPSC on October 7 for promotion cases of Readers in General Surgery and Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion has been held. The matter is being followed up in the UPSC for holding up early DPC meetings and interviews for other posts.

Another interview for the post of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology will be held on October 15. Interviews for filling up the posts of Senior Lecturer on contract basis and Senior Residents/ Demonstrators/Junior Residents in various specialities have been held in the past one month.

Another change initiated in the GMCH in the past one month is the payment of salary to all contractual staff recruited through contractors by October 7. Earlier the salary used to be released to such employees after 20th of each month. It was a long-pending demand of the contractual staff. Detailed meetings were held by the Director-Principal with all the contractors and it was made clear to the contractors that salary must be released by the 7th of every month as per labour rules which was agreed by the contractors.

Fortis offers cardiac package

A special cardiac health check-up package for Rs 2,000 is being offered by Fortis Heart Institute here to mark the World Heart Month and 50th anniversary of Chandigarh. According to a press statement issued by the hospital here, the cardiac check-up would include the lipid risk profile for coronary artery disease as well as a free consultation with the dietician.

Dr Achintya Moulick, Chairman, cardio-vascular sciences, of the hospital, said, “This is a part of Fortis efforts aimed at creating awareness among the masses regarding their health management. When people take even the simplest steps to improve their health, the results can be significant.”

Raid de Himalaya
The gutsy women from South

A three-member women team, along with a male member competed in the just concluded Raid de Himalaya in Manali. Rajini Varadarajan and Jaishree Varadaraj, entrepreneurs from Coimbatore, and Anila and Dharam Chand, both from Manali, secured first place in the sport utility vehicle category and overall second place in the reliability test.

Jaishree and Rajini met the correspondent at the Chandigarh airport before flying to Chennai on way to Coimbatore. Jaishree said, “Look, our team mate Anila has been kind enough to drop us to this place and now she would go back to her hometown Manali after covering this long journey”. “She deserves a pat on her back”, remarked Jaishree.

Anila and Dharam Chand who drove the Scorpio in the rally, with Jaishree and Rajini as navigators said, ‘it was really nice to be in the company of these gutsy women from south. Both Jaishree and Rajini said, “They never faced any health problem during their four-day rally, rather they were able to relish the dhaba food, which included paranthas, rice and dal. Both said, “Even -20°C temperature at Pang village did not deter them.

Anila, who had achieved the feat of covering 24,000 km in just three weeks, more than a decade back was of the opinion that the average speed for the participants should be increased. Rajini opined that the organisers did a fine job of organising the mega rally, but she feels that the total distance must be increased. Rajini and Jaishree both have planned to take part in the extreme category.

DAV ‘A’ XI trounce Shishu Niketan

A rich haul of five wickets for just 10 runs by Sourav Arora helped DAV “A” team in trouncing Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, in the Shivalik trophy cricket tournament organised by the UT Cricket Association here today at the DAV Senior Secondary School grounds, Sector 8.

Brief scores: DAV “A” — 223 for two in 25 overs (Sidharth Sharma 56 n.o., Vijay 51, Gourav Chopra 40). Shishu Niketan — 56 all out in 12 overs (Sourav Arora 5 for 10, Gourav Chopra 2 for 20, Arjun 2 for 14).

In another tie played today, the DAV “B” team defeated Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, by 38 runs.

Brief scores: DAV “B” — 167 for six in 25 overs (Harjeet 37, Bharat 24, Karanveer 28 n.o., Puneet Pal 3 for 34, Subodh 2 for 30). Shivalik School —129 all out in 24 overs (Pushapjeet 45, Atul 19, Balwinder 18).

Nominated

Prem PuriMr Prem Puri, Assistant Education Officer, UT Education Department, has been nominated as the Vice-President of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). Mr Puri received a message in this regard from the Secretary-General of the SGFI. Mr Puri said the UT would bid for a few events in this year’s National School Games.

The elections of the SGFI were held on October 9 in New Delhi. Mr Satpal was elected President and Mr P.S. Chhabra Secretary-General.

MCM eves win

The MCM DAV College for Girls, Sector 36, and the Government College for Girls, Sector 11, surged ahead by winning their matches in the Panjab University inter-college zonal basketball tournament played here today at the PU campus grounds. MCM eves beat GNG College, Ludhiana, 77-03 while GCG-11 defeated GCG-42 by a narrow margin of 27-26. PU campus lost to the Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, 42-66 while DAV College, Hoshiarpur, beat Dashmesh Girls College, Badal, 58-22.

Kho-kho champs

The under-19 kho-kho team of Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, which won the UT inter-school tournament held recently.Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, won laurels in kho-kho (boys) and handball (girls) when their under-19 teams won the UT inter-school tournaments in both disciplines. In handball, the school defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21. In kho-kho, the school beat SGGS Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Sector 35. In the under-19 boys handball event, Sanjay school boys made it to the final, to be held on October 17.

The under-19 kho-kho team of Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, which won the UT inter-school tournament held recently.

Sports day

AMBALA: The annual sports day of Darshan Academy was held here yesterday. Mrs Anita Sehga, District Sports Officer, and Mr Satwinder Singh Heera, a weightlifting coach, were the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively. Students participated in various events. Darshan House won the sports trophy.

The first-prize winners in different events included Vishawpreet, Simran, Rajat, Jasmeet Kaur, Vishawjeet, Vikas, Aanchal, Loveneet, Baldeep, Tejasvi, Sant Prasad, Manpreet, Vikas, Richa, Manish, Ritu, Gurdas, Sarawjeet, Akshay, Tejasvi, Amandeep, Surbhi, Gurpreet, Ritu, Gurpreet, Amar, Avneesh, Kiran, Manmeet, Ritu, Vasundhara and Jasdeep.

UPSC seeks clarifications

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has asked the Chandigarh Administration for certain clarifications on the appointment of Chief Engineer. Well-placed sources said the UPSC had wanted some more information on the two contenders, Mr V.K. Bhardwaj and Mr K.B. Sharma.

The Administration had sent the case to the UPSC for appointing a Chief Engineer. It is the UPSC which has to appoint a committee and set a date. The post of Chief Engineer had fallen vacant after Mr Puranjit Singh retired on September 30. The Administration handed over charge of Chief Engineer, Chandigarh Administration, to Mr Bhardwaj while Mr Sharma was handed over the charge of Chief Engineer Municipal Corporation, but his designation was kept as Superintending Engineer. Before September 30, Mr Bhardwaj was the Chief Engineer in MC.

Order to construct basement withdrawn

The Chandigarh Administration has withdrawn permission given to booth owners to construct basements in booths. In a notification, the Administration has said last year’s order in February permitting construction of basements has been withdrawn.

Sources said those people who had already constructed a basement would not be disturbed. The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal today protested against the order.
