Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 30
A resort owned by the family of a Punjab police officer in Zirakpur today came under the watchful eyes of the Income Tax Department. Sleuths of the department landed at the resort, Bristol, located on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, to ascertain the sources of investment in creating its infrastructure.

A few days back, the department had conducted an extensive survey at Sohi Resorts, owned by the family of a known Congress leader from the area.

Sources in the department said apprehending evasion of income tax, officers of the department from the Patiala range were today busy in conducting the survey at the resort in Zirakpur. The survey could be extended to other marriage palaces and resorts in the area, said a senior officer in the department.

The sources said the investment made in raising the structure, collections from marriage functions and the related activity of catering and tent houses had come under the scrutiny by IT sleuths. The account books and financial records of the marriage resort had been taken in possession by the assessing officers.

Till the filing of this report, the survey was in progress and nothing conclusive had been yielded. A few days ago, a lavish marriage party of an NRI had taken place at the resort.

Panchayat land to house cattle owners
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 30
The Chandigarh Administration today decided to give Rs 8 lakh to develop panchayat land spread across five villages for settling cattle rearers in the villages while charging rent which will be payable to the panchayats.

The money will be given from the funds of the market committee as the Administration aims to settle all 6,000 milch cattle on these lands. At present, a scrutiny is on to physically verify the claims of 400 applicants who had sought land for cattle rearing. The applicant will have to have a minimum of five milch cattle. The minimum land on offer is 150 square yards. The maximum land on offer is 350 square yards. The rent is Rs 2 per square yard.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, said the first allocation would be made within two months in villages of Maloya and Khuda Lahora. Collectively these two villages have about 45 acres of land which had been identified for the allotment to cattle rearers. Another 15 acres of Panchayat land had been identified in villages of Mauli Jagran, Khuda Ali Sher and Kaimbwalla.

The issue of resettlement of cattle had come up as the Administration had rejected a resolution of the municipal corporation seeking to stop the impounding of cattle in five villages falling under the area of the municipal council.

The municipal council had passed a resolution on April 29 this year seeking that a drive to impound cattle should be stopped and sought that people carrying out dairy farming should be allotted lands elsewhere. The council had sought time for six months. The Administration rejected the demand of the council to allot lands for dairy farming or to stop the challaning drive.

The Administration had then said that the position was clear that there should be no cattle in the municipal limits. Now the resettlement is being carried out in villages which are outside the municipal limits. The Periphery Control Act provided for cattle rearing activity, thus the scheme had been floated.
