4 diarrhoea cases reported

Panchkula, September 28
As many as four cases of diarrhoea and other water-borne infections were reported from Burj Kotian labour colony today.

The patients — Yashodha (4), Khem Pal (25), Anil Kumar ( 14) and Raje ( 55), have been admitted to the General Hospital here.

Meanwhile, the district administration and the Health Department had geared up to fight the epidemic spread of water-borne diseases in the labour colony inhabited by labours employed at stone crushers. As many as five teams of doctors surveyed the colony consisting of 500 hutments.

Dr Gyanendra Sharma, officiating Chief Medical Officer, Panchkula, informed that 562 patients in the colony were examined today, including 230 cases of fever. The department prepared 320 slides today, and the patients who had tested positive for malaria yesterday, were given treatment. Fogging was also done in the area.

Dr Sharma said 5,000 chloroquin tablets were distributed and 2,000 chlorine tablets were given to be mixed in drinking water supply. The Public Relations Department also geared up and made announcements about maintaining hygiene.

200 donate blood at camp

Chandigarh, September 28
More than 200 persons donated blood at a blood donation camp organised by the Aggarwal Sabha at Aggarsain Bhavan in Sector 30 here today. The camp was inaugurated by the UT Administrator, Justice (retd) O.P. Verma, to commemorate the Maharaja Aggarsain Jayanti.

Praising the Sabha for carrying out its social responsibility, Justice Verma said it was our duty to help the underprivileged. He assured the Sabha of his help in its endeavour to start a dharamshala on the premises of Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32. Justice Verma also inaugurated the ambulance van service started by the sabha.

At least 80 girls who had completed tailoring courses from Aggarsain Bhavan tailoring school were given away certificates by the chief guest. Meritorious students of the Aggarwal community were also honoured on the occasion.

Earlier Mr Prem Chand Gupta, president of the sabha, welcomed the chief guest. A former Mayor Mr Gian Chand Gupta, also spoke on the occasion.

The celebration concluded with a colourful cultural programme in the evening. Prof Chaman Lal Gupta , Minister of State for Defence, was the chief guest while Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, MP, was the special guest.

Sneha, Kaptan race to glory in triathlon

The 12th Senior National Triathlon Championship, which was held at the Sukhna lake saw Sneha Shampur of Karnataka race to glory in the women’s section while Kaptan Singh of the Services captured the first place in the men’s section.

The one day meet was organised by the Chandigarh State Triathlon Association. Kaptan Singh(34) a native of Haryana, clocked one hour 52 minutes and 55 seconds in three legs, which consisted of 1.5 km of swimming in the lake, 40 km of cycling and 10 km of running on the lake road towards Saketri.

In the women’s section it was 18 year-old engineering student from Bangalore Sneha, who going through three similar events finished with two hours, 15 minutes and 40 seconds. She was a national-level swimmer before taking a plunge into this sport.

In the men’s section, it was 22-year-old Joy Singh of Manipur employed with the Services surprised all with his maiden silver medal. Akhil Sheikh of the Services secured third place.

In the women’s section Meenakshi of Maharashtra clocked two hours 32 minutes and 40 seconds to finish second. Mayna of Delhi camethird by clocking three hours and five seconds.

Earlier, the meet was flagged off by Mr Lal Singh, Finance, Planning and Cooperation Minister, Punjab, at 7 a.m. He also announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh from his discretionary quota.

Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang, Sports and Animal Husbandry Minister, Punjab, presided over prize distribution. As many as 92 triathletes, both men and women, drawn from 24 states and union territories took part in the meet which also served as the basis for the selection of the Indian triathlon team for the forthcoming Asian Triathlon Championship to be held in Chennai on November 2.

The results are:

Men — Kaptan Singh (Services) 1, Joy Singh (Services) 2, Akhil Sheikh Services) 3, Chentamarak Shan (Karnataka) 4, Amarkant (Haryana) 5, Mathanghamba (Manipur) 6.

Women—Sneha Shampur (Karnataka)1,Meenakshi (Maharashtra) 2, Mayna (Delhi) 3, Sowmia Joseph (Kerala) 4, Julle (kerala) 5.
