Give due share to Ladakh, says Sonia Leh, September 25 “The BJP is working to create a wedge between brothers and divide them on communal lines while the Congress is working for the unity of all,” Ms Gandhi said while addressing a public meeting here this afternoon. Congress leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, always worked for the uplift of people irrespective of caste, creed and religion. “It was the Congress which worked for the preservation of Ladakhi culture after the fall of Tibet to China in 1962,” she said, adding that Pandit Nehru opened Central Institute for Buddhist Studies at New Delhi and also started a school for the Ladakhi children there. Recalling the sacrifice made by soldiers in Kargil, the Congress President lauded the people of Leh and Kargil for helping the Army defeat the enemy. However, Ms Gandhi said the party condemned corruption in defence deals. She said the Congress would continue to work for the overall development of the Ladakh region. Ms Gandhi, who could not visit Kargil because of bad weather, said it was the Congress government at the Centre which had set up the LAHDC in Leh and Kargil. “It is again the Congress-PDP coalition government in the state which has given full powers to the LAHDC after the National Conference government delayed the same for six years,” she added. Regarding the territory status demand, Ms Gandhi said her party would see that Ladakh got its due share within Jammu and Kashmir. “It is for the first time two ministers from the Ladakh region are in the state Cabinet,” she said. She said after the coalition government took over in the state, the situation had improved.

Alchi hydel project gets Central nod Leh, September 25 He said the state had already approached the Centre for providing funds for the project. Mr Sharma, currently on a four-day tour to Ladakh, said another 3 mw hydel project at Martselang, involving Rs 34 crore, would be commissioned next year. He said Rs 23 crore had already been spent on the project so far. Mr Sharma, who also reviewed the present power situation in Ladakh at a high-level meeting, stressed on accelerating the place of work on various projects under execution in the district to meet the growing power demand in the area. The coalition government has taken up the stupendous task of tapping the hydro potential by involving the private sector, he said adding that had this initiative been taken by earlier governments, the situation in the power sector would have been entirely different. He said the government had identified various streams and rivers in ladakh area — including Sindh, shayok and rivulets like Dha, Hanu, Dhomkher, Bogdang, Sasoma and Kumdok — for setting up hydel projects. Once these projects are taken up, Ladakh would become surplus in power generation, he said.
