Bus terminus to go in private hands
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, September 12
The Transport Department is planning an ultra-modern building for the General Bus Stand here. The department has decided to hand over the bus stand here to a private body. The Punjab Infrastructure Development Board (PIDB) has invited bids from reputed builders and companies to construct the new building and provide other necessary facilities at the bus terminus.

This information was given by Mr Vijay Kain, Principal Secretary, Transport Department, Punjab, after presiding over a monthly review meeting here recently. Mr Kain also held discussions with the general managers of different depots of Punjab Roadways and the District Transport Officer.

He said the PIDB had evolved a comprehensive plan to modernise a number of bus stands in major cities and towns of the state, including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala, Moga and Ludhiana, through private participation on ‘build, operate and transfer’ (BOT) basis and a bid for the bus stand at Amritsar had already been finalised under the plan.

Mr Kain said due to serious resource crunch, the Transport Department, at its own, was not in a position to invest huge funds required for improvement in the pathetic condition of most of the bus stands in Punjab and in the prevailing circumstances, private participation seemed to be the only available alternative.
