About 42,000 victims of animal bites immunised
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 2
Director of Health Services in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Dr K. N. Tiwari today claimed to have immunised around 42,000 victims of animal bites, particularly of dog and monkey bites by New Generation Tissue Culture vaccines. The system of administering the new vaccine was started from April last year.

Dr Tiwari advised the animal bite victims that washing of wound was of utmost importance. The victims should wash the wounds just after they have been bitten.

In 90 per cent of the cases, virus could be removed from the wound this way, minimising the risk of entering it in the central nervous system. He also advised that no irritants should be applied to the wound.

He said that the victims of animal bite require post-exposure prophylaxis with vaccines to protect them against rabies. The older nervous system vaccines require 14 injections in the abdomen and has high rate of complication and morbidity. The newer tissue culture vaccines require a maximum of five doses as per the WHO schedule.

The animal should be watched for 10 days and if it survives this period, then the vaccine can be discontinued. These vaccines are extremely safe, less painful and complications are rare.

The animal bite cases should be reported to a health institute as soon as possible and the recommended vaccination schedule should be strictly followed.

He warned that rabies is a fatal disease. The MCD is treating about 25,000 animal bite cases annually.

It runs 10 anti-rabies vaccine centres at Hindu Rao Hospital, Urban Health Centre at Karol Bagh, Primary Health Centre at Kanjhawala, Mehrauli, Fatehpur Beri, Narela, Alipur, Tilak Nagar Colony Hospital, Civil Hospital Shahadra and Poly Clinic at Onkar Nagar.
