Duttan is IAF weightlifting champion

Chandigarh, September 2
The Air Force Weightlifting Championship — 2003 began this evening at the Lecma Auditorium, 3 BRD, Air Force, here today. It was inaugurated by Air Vice Marshal, GP D ‘Souza, Air Officer In charge, Logistics Management, Headquarters Maintenance Command (MC), IAF.

Cpl Duttan of the Maintenance Command made a clean sweep in three competitions in 56 kg category. He lifted 85 kg in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk events to make a total of 195 kg.

Cpl Sajesh Kumar of South Western Air Command made a record by lifting 77.5 kg in snatch, 97.5 kg in clean and jerk to make a total of 175 kg.

Third position in this category was bagged by AC Rambabu of Training Command, who lifted 75 kg in snatch and 92.5 kg in clean and jerk with a total lift of 167.5 kg.

AVM D’ Souza also gave away the prizes to the today’s winners.

Nine Ball tournament

Sumit Talwar edged out Yuvraj 7-1 in the Third Vishnu Pal Memorial Nine Ball State Tournament played here today at the Billiards Centre, Sector 22. Michael Verma defeated Gaurav Nagpal by seven frames to five. Saurav beat Aakash Kapoor 7-1. In other matches of the day, Gagandeep Singh beat Saurav 7-2.

In a crucial match played today, Parmod Kumar beat Vishal 7-6 and Honey Chadha 7-3. In another thrilling tie, Arif Gul beat Judge Bali 7-6.

GMSSS-21 win laurels: Judokas and swimmers of the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, brought laurels to their institution by winning medals in the UT Inter-School Sports Meet. In judo, the school players won five gold medals, four silver medals and nine bronze medals. Two bronze medals were secured in swimming.

Ms Indra Dhingra, Principal of the school, appreciated the superb achievements of the students and later honoured them.

Gold medal winners: Judo (Under19) — Geeta Bansal (40 kg); Under17 — Jyoti Sharma (40 kg); Boys (under19) — Gurminder Singh (open category); Sandeep Singh (60kg); Under14 — Rohit Verma( 25 kg).

Silver medals (under 19): Pooja (48kg); under17 — Neha Saini (36 kg); under 19 boys Sanjay (50 kg); under 14 — Mohit Verma (35 kg). Bronze medals — Simranjit (48kg), Ritu (44 kg); under 17 — Anu Dhiman (44kg).

Under14 girls — Jyoti (open category) and Tanisha (27 kg); Under 19 boys — Harish (55 kg), Devesh (75 kg); under 14 boys — Deepak (30kg).

In swimming, Sajal Sharma clinched two bronze medals in 100 metres, freestyle and 100 metres backstroke in the under 19 categories.

Shooting meet

The two-day Punjab State Shooting Championship — 2003, will be organised by the Punjab Rifle Shooting Association for two days from September 7 at the New Shooting Range Complex in Phase VI, SAS Nagar.

According to a press note, the competitions will be held in air rifle and air pistol category. The contest is open to all Punjab students in individual and team events.

The students, below the age of 19 and 15 as on December 31 will be treated as junior and sub-junior shooters, respectively. Entries will be accepted at the Shooting Range Complex till 12 noon on September 7. The shooters will represent their schools in the Seventh All-India Kumar Surendra Singh Inter- School Shooting Championship to be held at Ghaziabad from September 27 to October 1.

UT hockey umpire for Olympic qualifiers

Chandigarh, September 2
Mr Satinder Sharma, international hockey umpire of Chandigarh who is working as Assistant Manager in State Bank of India at Panjab University here, has been appointed as official umpire for the men’s Oceania Olympic Qualifier Tournament being held in New Zealand. The winner of the tournament’s three-test series will qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. The Test series will be played at Christchurch, and Wellington from September 17 to 21.

Mr Satinder Sharma has already officiated in many international tournaments, including the junior World Cup at Hobart (Australia); men’s World Cup (Kuala Lumpur); Champions Trophy (Colonge - Germany); and Asian Games (Busan- Korea).

Mr Sharma has been elected in the elite world panel. He is the first Indian to be selected on the panel.

Applications invited from old, destitute

Chandigarh, September 2
The Food and Supplies Department of Chandigarh Administration today invited applications from the aged and destitute under the “annapurana” scheme.
Under this scheme, 10 kg of food grain shall be provided free of cost to the indigent senior citizens who are eligible for old age pension under the National Old Age Pension Scheme but are presently not getting the same. The applicant should be above the age of 65 years in case of male and 60 years in case of female and should be a resident of Chandigarh for last three years. The monthly income of the applicant should not exceed Rs 1000 if one of the spouses is alive and if both are alive the monthly income should not exceed Rs 1500.

Applicants can approach the District Food & Supplies Officer, UT., at the office of Department of Food & Supplies, Basement Annexe of Municipal Corporation Building, Sector 17. TNS

MC auctions parking lots, nets Rs 17 lakh

Chandigarh, September 2
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh today auctioned the paid parking lots in Sectors 8, Bank Square, Sector 17, and Shanti Kunj, Sector 16, netting around Rs 17 lakh.

The Sector 8 paid parking lot was auctioned for Rs 6.31 lakh against a reserve price of Rs 2.97 lakh and that of Sector 17 Bank Square drew the highest bid of Rs 9.60 lakh against a reserve price of Rs 6 lakh. The Shanti Kunj parking lot was auctioned for Rs 1.12 lakh against a reserved price of Rs 1 lakh.

The bank square parking was auctioned after the earlier contractor surrendered.
