Shastri Club down City in soccer league
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 22
Five times former champions Shastri Club, who boast of the best lineup this season, drubbed City Club 2-0 in the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL Senior Division Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Friday.

In a Group B preliminary league contest, Shastri Club, promoted to the Senior Division League this year, displayed their depth in talent in an obvious manner when they put the City citadel under tremendous pressure from word go.

Medios Subhash Negi and Harish Bisht were the livewire of Shastri’s attacks as they fashioned pleasing moves to penetrate the City goal area time and again.

They should have won by a bigger margin, but for their hurried approach while shooting at the goal.

Subhash Negi eventually broke the ice when he opened the account in the 27th minute with a fine shot. Nine minutes later, Harish Bisht enhanced the lead.

On resumption, City tried to turn the table on their opponents, when they went on the offensive. The Shastri defence had to work hard to keep the marauding City forwards at bay. But mercifully, City shooters Jatin Singh Bedi, Shamim Ahmed and Harpreet Singh were wayward in their goal-scoring attempts, muffing virtual ‘sitters’ from close range.

In another Group B match, a charged up Tarun Sangha stunned former champions Mughals with a lone-goal victory.

Inside-left Ekkramali pumped in the match-winner in the 50th minute.

Former champions Indian National drubbed Goans 4-1 in a Group A match at the Nehru Stadium. The teams were level 1-1 at half time. The highlight of the match was a brilliant hattrick by striker Deepak who scored the first three goals in the 11th, 60th and 78th minutes. Outside left Gurtek completed the tally seconds before close.

Shailender Rawat reduced the margin for Goans in the 39th minute.

In another Group A match at the Nehru Stadium, Simla Youngs were held to a 1-1 draw by Delhi Police. Simla Youngs forged ahead in the 53rd minute through Devesh Kaushik while captain Mahesh Bisht equalised for Delhi Police 1-1 in the 65th minute.

Saturday’s fixtures: Royal Rangers vs Garhwal Heroes (3 pm); Indian Air Force, Palam vs Ahbab (4.30 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium. Moonlight vs Raisina Sporting (3 pm); Hindustan .

Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 22
Star Sports will provide live coverage of the Formula One World Championship-Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday from 4.30 pm with the complete package of ‘Race Day’, the preview show, upto 7.30 pm, ending with the review show ‘Chequered Flag” at 18 popular restaurants These include Ssteel at the Ashoka in Delhi. The qualifying races were held on Friday and will be held again on Saturday with the big event, the Grand Prix, scheduled on Sunday and the “Chequered Flag” on Monday.

As racing resumes in Formula One drivers’ championship after a three-week gap with the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari ace Michael Schumacher finds his quest for a record-setting sixth crown seriously threatened. Though Schumacher still leads the standings in the championship, he has won for the past three years, he faces a serious challenge from the Williams duo of Juan Pablo Montoya and his own brother Ralf, McLaren’s young Finn Kimi Raikkonen and team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

All these drivers have had a stand on the podium this season. The driver’s points race has tightened up considerably in the past couple of months as several other drivers have been taking the chequered flag ahead of Schumacher. The imperious German still leads on 71 points but Montoya has now moved into second spot on 65, Raikkonen is third on 62. The action now moves to Hungary where last year, Schumacher and Barrichello enjoyed a Ferrari one-two. That’s just the result the Italian team need now or else their reign at the top could be in jeopardy.
