Four persons, including a city advocate, a bailiff and an “ahlmad” with the local court, have been booked by the police for conspiring with a shop owner in cheating the district courts by falsely claiming about a legal order authorising them to reclaim a shop from a tenant in Sarafa market.

Chamera unit shut down

The power supply to the region was hit today as the authorities of the Chamera Hydel Project had to shut down one unit and reduce the power generation by 180 MW units daily. The sudden and severe development has taken place following fall in the inflow of water in the Chamera reservoir which gets water from the Ravi reservoir.

The All-India Tribes Dal has demanded welfare schemes for the destitute tribes that have not been rehabilitated for the past 50 years and are living in abject poverty. The members claim that they are being treated as second class citizens in their own country.

Ex-servicemen stage dharna

Members of the Indian Ex-Services League, Punjab and Chandigarh, sat in dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner here today in protest against the imposition of sales tax on CSD items. Addressing the ex-servicemen, Lieut-Col Bhag Singh, president of the league, termed the decision as unfortunate one.

Woman, children booked for murder

On the statement of Ms Nirmala Devi, a resident of Dr Ambedkar Colony, the Haibowal police yesterday registered a case under Sections 302 and 328 of the IPC against Ramesho, her son Rajinder and daughter Sunita, all residents of Partap Pura, for allegedly killing a man.

Electroplaters’ plea to govt

The Ludhiana Electroplaters Association has urged the government to extend all possible assistance to the electroplating units in the city in setting up a common effluent treatment plant so that more than 200 units, operating in residential areas, might not be uprooted.

Eleven teenage students from different schools of Derby, who are presently in the city under the Citizenship of the People of the World programme, are overwhelmed by Punjabi hospitality. They are impressed by the development made by India in various fields, but at the same time they are critical of the constant India bashing by the foreign media.

College teachers hold protest
Ludhiana, August 22
In response to a call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union, college teachers held a rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here today. District-level protest rallies were also held at various district headquarters falling in Panjab University’s purview. Prof Kanwaljit Singh, state secretary PCCTU (PU), said in a press note that district presidents — Prof Mehta (Hoshiarpur), Prof Parminder Singh (Ludhiana), Prof Manoj Kumar (Abohar), Prof Jagtar Singh (Moga and Ferozepore) — reported protest rallies against “anti-teacher, anti-education, anti-student and anti-people” policies of the Punjab Government.

Primary teachers plan dharna

Protesting against the move of the Punjab Government to hand over the control of government primary schools to panchayats, eight unions of government primary teachers have decided to hold dharna in front of the mini-secretariat on August 29.

‘Kamaal Karte Ho Aap Bhi’ to be staged on August 30

The city will witness the acting prowess of ‘Kahin Kissi Roz’ fame Ramola Sikand (Sudha Chandran). She is playing the lead role in a play ‘Kamaal Karte Ho Aap Bhi’, which will be staged on August 30 in the city. The Ludhiana Sanskritik Samagam is organising the play.

The hope for a better healthcare system to people living in the outskirts of the city remains a distant dream with neither the local health authorities nor the district administration having any information on the presence of ultramodern mobile diagnostic units flagged off from Delhi earlier this week for use in Punjab.

The 8th edition of the Punjab State Softball Championship for junior boys and girls will be held at Karmasar Rara Sahib, 25 km from here, from August 29 to 31, according to Mr P.N. Passi, honorary secretary, Punjab Softball Association.
