700 students take part in painting contest

Panipat, August 22
The National Painting Competition organised under the auspices of the National Child Welfare Council at Bal Bhavan here yesterday was a big draw with over 700 students from 35 schools participating in it.

Inaugurating the competition, Mr R. P. Bhardwaj, ADC, stressed the need of holding contests in performing arts with a view to developing the all-round personalities of the children. The DC, Mr Mulk Raj Anand, who was the chief guest at the concluding function, asked the officials to hold such competitions at regular intervals.

The District Child Welfare Officer, Mr Sandeep Dahiya, informed that the first three prize-winning entries in all five groups would be sent to Chandigarh for a state-level contest. The first three prize-winning entries in the state contest would be sent to the National Child Welfare Council, New Delhi and the President will award the first three best entries at the national level contest.

Meanwhile, in the Green Group, Arzoo and Udam Kochhar of Bal Vikas School won the first and second prize, respectively. Mehak of SD Vidya Mandir was placed in the third position. In the White Group, Sanya Batra of Bal Vikas bagged the top prize, while Sagar Arora and Pulkit Goyal of SD Vidya Mandir and DAV School, respectively, came second and third. And Radhika Malik of MJR Public School won first prize in the Red Group.

Girl ‘ditches’ youth in court

A case relating to an inter-caste marriage took a dramatic turn in the court of First Class Judicial Magistrate Sudhir Parmar when the girl submitted in writing that she did not know anything about her marriage.

On her statement, the Judicial Magistrate dismissed the plea of Devender of Turkpur village that he was married with Jyoti in a temple at Ashok Vihar in Delhi on May 27, 2003.

According to his plea, Jyoti of Khera Kalan in Delhi and he were in love and married. However, her parents were opposed to it since they belonged to different castes and they had confined her illegally.

Devender pleaded to the court to free Jyoti from her parents’ custody. In support of his plea, he submitted photographs of their marriage in the court with the claim that both were adults and eligible for the marriage.

However, Jyoti, in her statement, said that she was unaware about her marriage with Devender.
