Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 18
With eye flu or conjunctivitis having spread across the NCR, doctors have been quick to dole out precautions as well as solutions. Dr Markenday Ahuja, Director, Shri Baba Mast Nath Charitable Hospital, Rohtak, points out that reaching for over-the-counter eyedrops when the eyes become red or itchy may actually worsen the condition.

“Conjunctivitis,” he explains, “is the commonest infection of the eye, which occurs in acute as well as epidemic forms.”

Pointing out the symptoms of the ailment, Dr Ahuja said, “Redness in the eyes, thick greenish yellow oozing, swollen flakes and itching are the common features. Washing hands, avoiding contact with an infected person, avoiding self-medication are the precautions one must follow.”

As for people who have contacted the ailment, “a visit to a specialist is a must or if there is pain in the eyes, blurring or loss of vision or if the pupils are different in size”.

Dr Ahuja also advises changing of towels and pillowcases and wiping the discharge immediately with a disposable tissue to stop the infection from spreading.
