Share a smile, say doctors
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 18
In its effort to take oral healthcare and dental awareness to the grassroots level through mass education and affordable professional service to the underprivileged, the Smile India Foundation, will be launching ‘share a smile’ and ‘serve a smile’ programmes.

The Smile India is a Delhi-based organisation, where a team of dental professionals have taken upon the responsibility to improve the quality of dental professionalism. “The Smile India Foundation is a platform, created to meet requirements of modern dentistry. Under this we plan to conduct structured continuing dental education programmes for professionals,” informed Dr Sushant Umre, a cosmetic dentist from Delhi.

He said though 10,000 dentists were being trained every year at about 170 dental colleges in the country, young professionals were not getting enough opportunities to do practical training and identify and rectify complicated cases.

He said a variety of learning activities, from a two-day weekend programme to elaborate three-month programmes, would be held in aesthetic dentistry, endodontics and dental implantology in a structured manner.

He said the programmes would be launched on August 23. “Apart from training dentists, our other objective is to reach out to orphans, widows, old- age and destitute homes and schools.” As a part of the programme, the organisation has tied up with a number of NGOs like Prayas, the Voluntary Health Organisation, Chaman and old-age homes.

Even for regular patients, the treatment comes at a subsidised cost because most manufacturers of dental equipment and materials have joined hands with the foundation.
