Claim of hospital contested

The Mukat Hospital and Heart Institute today contested the claim of Fortis Heart Institute that the cardiac re-modelling surgery had been performed for the first time on a failing heart of a 50-year-old patient from Jalandhar.

The Fortis Heart Institute had claimed that it was for the first time in the country that cardiac re-modelling surgery had been performed on a 50-year-old patient, Mrs Meena, from Jalandhar, at their institute in Mohali.

The Mukat Hospital authorities said that this surgery, called venticular re-modelling, was performed for the first time by Dr Antonio M. Califiore on a patient in Mukat Hospital on November, 24, 2000.

The patient, 70-year-old Sohan Singh, underwent successful operation for terminal heart failure, after which many people had undergone the surgery.

The hospital authorities said that doctors at the Mukat Heart Institute were well versed with this surgical procedure, which they did three years back.

Cholera patient discharged

SAS Nagar, August 15
A patient who had tested positive for cholera was discharged from Cheema Medical Complex in Phase IV here today.

Sikandar (8), a resident of a Jhuggi Colony near Phase II, suffered from acute diarrhoea and vomiting and was admitted to the hospital on Monday.

Dr Virdi said another patient, Surjit (2), was admitted to the hospital on Sunday with similar symptoms. Surjit, who came from Colony No 5 in Chandigarh, was discharged on Wednesday.

He said the tests carried out on both patients proved that they were cholera cases. OC

Shiva, Karunday for title clash

Chandigarh, August 15
Sixth seed Shiva Sangwan of Chandigarh today proved his worth in boys under-14 singles, when he defeated third seed Narinder Pal Singh, also of Chandigarh, to sail in the final of the AITA Junior Tour Tennis Tournament, which entered the penultimate day here today at the Sector 10 tennis stadium.

Shiva won in straight sets at 6-4, 6-4. He will now take on Karunuday Singh of Delhi, seeded fifth in the final to be held tomorrow morning. Earlier today, Karunuday bagged the boys’ doubles title in partnership with Zehn Laliwala. But in the semi-finals of the singles event, Karunuday was given a tough time by Deepinder Singh of Chandigarh with scores being 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-1.

In the girls singles semifinal, Surbhi Verma of Maharashtra outplayed Garima Vatwani to set up a title clash in final with Amrita Verma of Delhi who got the better of Sweta Kumari also of Delhi in the other semifinal.

Girls under-14 singles (quarterfinals): Sweta Kumari (DLI) bt Yajini Baluja (DLI) 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-2; Boys under-14 doubles (finals): Karanuday Singh and Zehn Laliwala bt. Kush Jagga and Ajay Kumar 1-0 (retd.).

Cricket tourney

New India Assurance XI and the Education Department surged ahead by winning their respective matches in the Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament played here today at the PEC cricket grounds.

First tie — UT Education Department: 118 runs in 20 overs (Rajesh 42, Raj Paul 36, Rajesh 30, Ajay Pandita 3 for 18, Prafful Sapru 3 for 30); Harmukh XI: 115 runs for six in 20 overs (Sanjay Raina 48 n.o., Ajay Pandita 38, Shiva 22, Aslam 2 for 20, Ravinder 2 for 18, Rajesh 2 for 20).

New property transfer charges

Chandigarh, August 15
The Chandigarh Administration today announced fresh rates for transfer of property for leasehold buildings. Penalty for misuse of property is payable on a monthly basis, while charges for property transfer is to be in one go.

In case of misuse, the charges are payable jointly and by the lessee and occupier of the site or building every month.

The rates for residential and institutional premises are Rs. 50 per square yard, if less than 25 per cent of the site or covered area of building is misused. It will be Rs. 100 per square yard if 25 per cent or more of the site or covered area of building is misused.

For commercial premises, the charges are Rs 20 per square foot for misuse of the ground floor, Rs 10 per square foot for misuse of the upper floor or basement floor and Rs 40 per square yard for misuse of the open area.

Spaces like corridors, passages and stairways shall be considered as part of the covered area.
