When Achrekar came calling...
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 7
It was a pleasant surprise for the trainees of the National Stadium cricket centre of coach Sunita Sharma when Dronacharya cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar came calling unannounced.

The boys watched in revered silence as Sunita Sharma reeled off the achievements of each boy present at the stadium.

Achrekar, the coach of Sachin Tendulkar and a host of other international cricketers, made a quiet appreciation of the National Stadium cricket centre as he is now recuperating from the after-effects of a mild stroke he suffered some time back.

Achrekar came to Delhi to attend a meeting of the Dronacharya award committee, and then stayed back to visit friends and some pilgrim centres in North India.

Achrekar said Delhi had plenty of cricket talent, though what he left unsaid was that the players of the Capital lacked discipline, compared to boys back in Mumbai.

Achrekar said one of his famous disciples, Vinod Kambli, can still get back into the Indian team if he put his mind on the game by applying a lot of self discipline.

Achrekar was all praise for Sunita’s coaching centre, though there was not much activity on Thursday as the recent rains have made the ground wet and not fit for serious practice sessions.

The coach in the sweltering heat without any fuss to make a close observation of the cricket centre, and he seemed impressed with what he saw, the talent in particular.
