Breastfeeding reduces cancer risk
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 7
The district unit of the Indian Academy of paediatrics, observed the world breast feeding week from August 1. It is an annual feature and lectures are held. This was stated by Dr R.S. Sibia, general secretary of the unit, at Dr B.L. Kapoor Memorial College here today.

Dr Sibia said breastfeeding was of paramount importance but some mothers offer bottles to babies. “This trend of top-feeding, which was earlier seen in well-to-do families, is becoming popular with lower classes as well”, the doctor said.

“Breast feeding provides all nutrients for the physical and mental development of the baby and prevents infections, especially diarrhoea, besides boosting the immune system, Dr Sibia said.

The incidence of the cancer of ovaries and breast was higher in mothers who did not breastfeed.

Dr Rajinder Gulati, a paediatrician at the ESI Hospital, spoke about the myths associated with breast- feeding. He said even women who had undergone a caesarean section, could breastfeed on the first day itself.
