Jagardeep excels in school cricket

A majestic performance by Jagardeep who remained unbeaten on 67 runs and grabbed two wickets helped Teja Singh Swatantar School to cruise to one-wicket victory over hosts Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, on the second day of the Gill Zone Inter-School Cricket Championship (u-19) here today.

Sacred Heart School won the toss and opted to bat first. They made 122 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. The main scorers were Sidharth Khanna and Angad who contributed 24 and 21 runs, respectively. For Teja Singh Swatantar School, Arun Kumar took four wickets conceding 28 runs while Jagardeep scalped two victims for 19 runs. Teja Singh Swatantar School found the target quite difficult as their batsmen struggled for each run.

However, Jagardeep rose to the occasion, steadied the innings and made valuable contribution of 67 runs which saw his team to surpass the host school’s total in the penultimate over of the match. No other batsman could make any impact.

For Sacred Heart Convent School, Rishab Mehtani (3 for 8) and Sandeep Dhand (2 for 28) bowled a tight line and length, sharing five wickets between them but their school team, in a nail-biting finish lost the battle by one wicket.

GGN school win

GGN Public School beat Greenland Senior Secondary School, GT Road, by four wickets while SAN Jain School trounced Tagore Public School, Atam Nagar, by 124 runs in the Inter-School (PAU Zone) Cricket Championship (u-19) being played at Government Model Senior Secondary School of Punjab Agricultural University ground here today.

Batting first, Green Land School scored 83 runs for seven in 10 overs. They got three overs less as penalty. Himanshu and Kanwar contributed 23 runs each. While for GGN Public School, Harvinder claimed three wickets for 24 runs and Deep Singh, Vishal and Jasdeep took one wicket each.

GGN Public School, helped by Jatinder (27) and Sunny (23), achieved the target after losing six wickets. For Green Land School, Kanwar and Nitin took three and one wicket for 18 and 11 runs, respectively.

In the second match, SAN Jain School amassed 163 runs losing five wickets in 20 overs. Raj Rattanvir top scord with 52 runs, followed by Ashish Sehgal and Rajveer who made 39 and 22, runs respectively. Pranav of Tagore Public School chipped in with three wickets for 15 runs

Facing a daunting task, Tagore Public School were bundled out for a meagre 39 runs in 15.5 overs. Ashish excelled in bowling calming four wickets while Sukwinder, Sachin and Rajveer claimed two wickets each.

Baseball meet results

Ramgarhia Senior Secondary School, Miller Gang, routed R S Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar 10-0 to win the Ludhiana District Baseball Championship (boys u-19) here today.

Harnek and Deepak scored two points each while Amit secured one. Earlier, R.S. Model Senior Secondary School beat SDP Senior Secondary School 12-2 to set up the title clash with Ramgarhia Senior Secondary School.

In throwball Pothohar Khalsa School beat Teja Singh Swatantar School 16-8, 16-14 to win the title. In the semi-finals, Pothohar School had defeated Government Multipurpose School 22-20, 9-15 and 15-13 while Teja Singh Swatantar School had outclassed BCM Arya School in straight sets 15-10, 15-10.

Whip cracked on vendors

In a drive against vendors selling stale vegetables and fruits, a team of the district administration in collaboration with the Health Department confiscated vegetables in various areas of the city.

As per the orders of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, the team led by SDM Harjinder Singh and Tehsilar Gurminder Singh seized the vegetables and fruits unfit for human consumption. A tanker of the administration carried such vegetables to a garbage dump outside the municipal limits.

The drive was initiated in view of the gastroenteritis and cholera threat in the city.
