New Delhi, August 2
The Delhi Government has informed the Delhi High Court that the pass percentage in its schools this year has gone up and the number of compartment cases has come down.
In an affidavit, the Director of Education, Mr Rajendra Kumar, stated that the pass percentage in the class XII and class X CBSE exams had increased by six and three per cent respectively.
While the compartment cases had reduced from 14.76 per cent in 2002 to 12.69 per cent this year for class XII, it had come down from 34.69 per cent in 2002 to 31.85 per cent in 2003 in class X.
The number of Delhi Government-run schools achieving 100 per cent results, for both class XII and class X board exams had also gone up, it was claimed.
All efforts, including appointment of teachers, towards improving the quality of education were being taken, it assured. The affidavit was in response to a PIL, filed by Social Jurists through counsel Ashok Agarwal, seeking urgent measures to check the continuously falling education standards in such schools.
The petitioner alleged that about 1,500 teachers were not found on duty in government schools and claimed that there was already a shortage of about 5,000 teachers in such institutions.
The judges also inquired from the authorities if all schools were equipped with libraries and laboratories or not, and if there was any shortage of librarians or lab technicians.
