Focus on technical education, says minister Chandigarh, August 2 After giving away prizes to students who had excelled in various fields, Mr Rawat said Indian educated workforce was second to none, but we were struggling for survival in the global market because of the ever-increasing brain drain. “Some stringent measures need to be evolved to check filtering away of our intelligentsia to the west and get fruitful and instant results,” said Mr Rawat. Sixty students were awarded diplomas in ‘instrument technology’, ‘mechatronics and industrial automation’ and ‘die and mould making’. The diplomas and post diplomas were awarded by Dr R.P. Bajpai, Director, CSIO, while Mr Rawat gave away Director’s Gold Medal and Principal’s Silver Medal to six students who had excelled in three streams. Suresh Pal won the Director’s Gold Medal and Gopal Krishan won the Principal’s Silver Medal in Diploma in Instrumentation Technology. Prashant Khullar won Director’s Gold Medal and Devender Singh Negi won Principal’s Silver Medal in Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics and Industrial Automation. Amandeep Singh Virk and Jagjivan won Director’s Gold Medal and Principal’s Silver Medal, respectively, in Advanced Diploma in Die and Mould Making. Saurabh Dhami was declared the best sportsman of the year. Earlier, Dr R.P. Bajpai, Director, CSIO, highlighted the activities of the ISTC in his address and welcomed the chief guest. Dr Bajpai talked about the new initiatives taken up by the CSIO in
biotechnology and nanotechnology and instrumentation for strategic and defence systems. Mr H.S. Gupta, Principal, ISTC, read out the annual report. On the occasion, an MoU was also signed between the CSIO and RMS Biotech Initiatives. |
FROM SCHOOLS Chandigarh, August 2 Spread across 24 rooms of the school, the exhibition by the junior wing conveyed the message of “God is one” by putting up models of a temple, a mosque, a church and a gurdwara in the corners of a room. Children dressed as priests preached unity. While the English department conveyed the importance of reading books by displaying characters from various books and novels, the social studies wing depicted
contrasting ways of imparting education in the ancient time of gurukuls and the present-day education system. On display in the science wing were projects of the circulatory system and the excretory system of human body. A diabetes-detection camp was also organised in this wing by the Lions Club Chandigarh Central to create awareness about the disease. The middle classes transported the gathering to the villages of Punjab. An entire room was transformed to give the look of a Punjab village. Students of the primary wing explained the working of banks right from the making of a draft, operating an ATM, opening an account to depositing money and operating the locker. The poster and collage section had thought-provoking displays on peace, environment, immunisation, female foeticide, corruption and national integration among others. The exhibition was inaugurated by the DPI (Schools), Mr D.S. Mangat. The Principal of the school, Mr Sanjay Sardana, said the exhibition was a result of hard work put in by the students.
Seminar held A seminar on effective parenting was organised by Sri Guru Harkrishan Model School, Sector 38, in collaboration with the department of Child Development, Government Home Science College, here today. The Centre Coordinator of Childline at the PGI, Ms Kulpreet Kaur, advised parents to keep channels of communication open with children and be good role models. She advised them against entering into arguments with children and respecting the privacy of the child. |

development course Chandigarh, August 2 Addressing a press conference, college Principal Prof S. Marriya said: "DAV College is the first institution to introduce the subject in the curriculum. A nominal fee of Rs 250 per student will be charged for the session. It will be mandatory for all students to attend the course. Theory and practical classes will be held. Scholarships will also be given to the students. We are also introducing Diploma in Mass Communication from this session. The 15-hour programme will cater to 2,500 students". The Director of Professional Studies, Mr D.S. Cheema, said: "It is essential to project yourself in today's time of competition. Everyone has a great potential, but the way you 'sell yourself' results in a major difference". The faculty would be provided by Global voice. |

Silver jubilee
celebrations Chandigarh, August 2 The major attraction at the function today was a mango festival which marked the culmination of a yearlong project started by the Nature Club in collaboration with other clubs running in the school. Other activities included dances, a quiz on mango, games and tatto-making in which all students got their faces painted with mango motifs. Eating joints and shopping counters were installed where various mango preparations were sold. Ms Sarita Manuja, Principal of the school, said it was time for the DAV Public School management to re-dedicate itself to the students. |

Dev Samaj freshers get warm welcome Chandigarh, August 2 A lively programme of song and dances doubled the enjoyment. The highlight of the programme was a talent hunt. Dressed in vibrant colours, 25 contestants mesmerised the audience with their poise and confidence during the three-round contest. While Amandeep Mann was chosen as ‘Miss Fresher’, Navneet and Preeti Singh Mann were declared first and second runners-up, respectively. The Principal, Ms V. Bhargava, welcomed the new students. |

Society to give award Chandigarh, August 2 Scholarships running into lakhs would be awarded to the students. Information brochures and application forms are available with Popular Book Store in Sector 22, City Book Store in Sector 11 and Shivalik Book Depot in Phase 7, SAS Nagar. The checking of answersheets will be on the computer. The centres for examination will be in 22 cities of Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh, Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar. The society plans to distribute books, conduct counselling classes and hold competitions at school-level for financially weak and meritorious students. |

SLSA, Mr Sant Parkash informed that following persons were entitled for free legal aid for filing or defending a case in any court of law—a member of a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe, a victim of trafficking in human beings or a beggar, a woman or a child, a mentally ill or otherwise disabled person, a victim of a mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocity, flood, an industrial workman, a person in custody or in a protective home, juvenile home, psychiatric hospital or nursing home or a person whose annual income from all sources does not exceed Rs 50, 000. |
