Modern ghazal lacks substance, say poets
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, July 31
Ghazal is an inherent part of Urdu and touches the chords of the heart with its imagery and music. These feelings were expressed by the Commissioner and Secretary Education, Haryana, Mr M.L. Tayal, while inaugurating a seminar on “Urdu ghazal-nai tanazoor” organised by Haryana Urdu Akademi today.

Recalling the poetic renditions of the past he said lyrics that were being churned out today were nowhere near melody and substance. Appreciating the efforts of the academy, he said a scheme had been introduced for providing a forum to Urdu writers, poets and intellectuals to interact.

Urdu poet Bashir Badr said poetry was not confined to any religion or language. Hailing Meera Bai and Kabir as great poets, he said their “scripts” might have been different but their feelings and expressions were the same.

Prominent among those who spoke were Dr Ali Ahmad Fatmi, Panipati Aziz Parihar, Mr Sheen Kaf Nizam, Mr Jinatulla Javed and the Director, Haryana Sahitya Academi, Dr Chander Trikha.
