Mulayam accuses Centre of misusing
CBI New Delhi, July 21 Addressing mediapersons at an early morning press conference, the Samajwadi Party leader said the Central Government had misused the CBI to “dilute” the chargesheet against Mr Advani and another Union Minister, Mr Murli Manohar Joshi, in the Babri Masjid demolition case. In an apparent reference to the Opposition’s move to bring an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, Mr Yadav said, “The CBI is an independent body and the Centre is misusing it to serve its political objective”. The Opposition parties had yesterday decided to bring an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on the issue of “misuse” of the CBI by the government. Mr Yadav also alleged that a private contractor was involved in the controversial Taj project. He said this should be exposed by the CBI during the course of its probe. Alleging the involvement of Chief Minister Mayawati in the project, he said the Union Tourism Ministry also did not pay much attention to the controversy surrounding the project. |

UK seeks letters rogatory on
Quattrocchi New Delhi, July 21 Confirming the receipt of a communique from the British authorities in this regard, a CBI official said today that the agency was confident of meeting the deadline. “All
necessary procedures and steps are being taken to ensure that the
letters rogatory reaches the British authorities,” he said. The letters rogatory had been obtained from the court holding trial in the case. The British authorities had said the account in a London bank of Mr Quattrocchi had been frozen till July 22, by which time they expected to receive the letters rogatory. The
CBI had earlier requested the British Government to freeze Quattrochhi’s

Italian businessman had left that country and was believed to be in

Teachers’ selection: SC directive to
Chautala New Delhi, July 21 A Bench comprising Mr Justice R.C. Lahoti and Mr Justice Ashok Bhan gave three weeks time to the Chief Minister and the Haryana Government after their counsel made a request for the same. Mr Sanjiv Kumar, in his rejoinder to the state government and Mr Chautala’s earlier reply, stuck to his allegations in his main petition against the Chief Minister that he was “pressurised” to change the selection lists for the appointment of 4,000 primary school teachers in 19 districts in 2000, which he did not oblige. The Chief Minister and the state government, in the earlier replies, had refuted the allegations contending that at no stage any “second selection” list was prepared. But the court had sought counter-affidavits from them to the rejoinder, filed by Mr Sanjiv Kumar. Six candidates, who could not make it to the selection lists, had also filed a petition, alleging that Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh were demanded from them at the behest of Chief Minister’s OSD Vidyadhar and each of them had paid Rs 10,000 in advance to two politicians through whom the money was demanded. |
