Excessive menstrual bleeding need not weigh heavy on women’s mind
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 20
There is good news for women who suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding. Thanks to the US FDA approved Thermachoice Uterine Balloon therapy, women can now bid goodbye to painful heavy periods.

According to a recent survey, over three crore women in India suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding, which causes anemia and weakness in them. “This simple and effective therapy can be offered if the first line of drug therapy fails, avoiding the need to go in for surgery,” said Dr P. M. Gopinath, a leading gynecologist at Sooriya Hospital, Chennai.

According to another gynecologist in Delhi, Dr Sharda Jain, “it is the most frequently encountered gynecological problem in India,” adding that the therapy requires eight minutes and could be performed in the outpatient procedures with local anesthesia. Even the recovery was fast as the patient could leave within an hour and get back to routine work without any bed rest.

Gynecologist Urvashi Sehgal observed, “young women prefer this treatment as they do not want to loose their uterus. They tend to feel they have become less feminine and less desirable after a hysterectomy. Their husbands think that after the uterus removal, women loose their sexual desire.”

More than two lakh women have used this procedure worldwide and as many as 5,000 women have availed this technique in India, which is available in over 160 centres across the country.

Malhotra hopes to hit the bull’s eye
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, July 20
Archery Association of India (AAI) president Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra, who is also the president of the All-India Council of Sports (AICS), was delighted at the brilliant performances of the Indian archers, both men and women, at the Van Cortland Park in New York. The men’s and women’s archery teams have qualified for the Athen Olympic Games in 2004, and Prof Malhotra felt that all the efforts put in by the AAI was finally paying rich dividends.

It may be recalled that the Indian men’s team, comprising Satyadev Prasad, Tarundeep Rai and Achalya Ved Kumar won their 1/16 match against the Russian team by scoring 249/242 out of a possible 270. They extended the lead against Ukrain and finally clinched victory at 247/232 to secure a berth in the semi-final of the 42nd World Outdoor Target Archery Championship, to join Korea, Sweden and Italy. India also ensured, in the process, a place in the Athens Olympics.

Prof Malhotra was also satisfied with the performance of `the women archers comprising Dola Banerjee, Reena Kumari and C Swuro.

He stated that it was a moment of glory as this was the first time in the history of Indian archery that both the men and women teams confirmed their berths for the Olympic Games. He said the display of the archers in New York will give a big boost to the sport in the country.

Prof Malhotra congratulated the archers on behalf of the Archery Association of India for their fine show. He advised the men’s team to maintain their momentum through mental concentration to hit the bull’s eye. He said the India archers should not let down their guard as they would have to tackle stronger challenges in the coming days.

The Indian team is expected to return to New Delhi on July 22.

The Indian archers’ performances have come as a pleasant surprise as the AAI has been making a lot of effort to improve the quality of performances by providing them with world class equipment and improved facilities at coaching camps.

Most of the archers are now gainfully employed as Prof Malhotra has been sparing no effort to get them employment in Government, public sector and private organisations. It was therefore no surprise that he felt vindicated when the archers qualified for the Olympic Games.

In another Group A match played at the Ambedkar Stadium, Uttranchal Heroes sneaked past Cosmos Club with a solitary-goal victory. Striker Rajesh Kanojia scored the match-winner in the 54th minute, after both the teams put up a close fight.

The Cosmos forwards were guilty of squandering away at least three golden chances to score as they failed to control the ball in slippery underfoot conditions following rains.

Indian Air Force, Palam scored a fluent 4-0 victory against Delhi Veterans in a Group A match at the Nehru Stadium ground. The Airmen led by three goals at the interval. Inside-right C H Jerom put the Airmen in the lead in the sixth minute while striker Kalyan Pal made it 2-0 in the 18th minute. Outside-left T. K.
