Geography, English most sought after PG subjects

Geography has emerged as the most sought-after subject among the postgraduate courses in Maharshi Dayanand University when the number of available seats is taken into account. As many as 311 candidates have applied for mere 30 seats in MA (Geography) course. A perusal of the figures available indicated that 105 applicants (33.76 per cent) are girl students and 54 (17.36 per cent) belong to rural areas.

The second largest number of applicants is for MSc (Maths). As many as 487 applications have been received for 50 seats of this course and 240 candidates (49.28 per cent) are girl students and 101 (20.73 per cent) are from rural areas.

MA (English) has proved to be the most popular course among girls. As many as 344 applications have been received for 50 seats of this course. Significantly, 280 candidates (81.39) are girl students and 95 (27.61 per cent) are from rural areas. MSc (Physics) and MSc (Chemistry) too have proved to be popular courses. As many as 296 candidates have applied for 40 seats of MSc (Physics) while 336 candidates have applied for 47 seats of MSc (Chemistry).

MSc (Bio-sciences including Botany, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Bio-technology, Bio-Chemistry and Genetics) has attracted 535 applications for 90 seats; 332 candidates (62.05 per cent) are girl students and 148 candidates (27.66 per cent) are from rural areas.

MEd course in the Faculty of Education has attracted 181 applications for 20 seats; 107 applicants (59.11 per cent) are girl students and 60 applicants (33.14 per cent) are from rural areas. As many as 266 applications have been received for the 60 seats in MCom course.

Textbooks distributed free to poor students

Sonepat, July 12
Atlas Cycle Industries Limited, the largest manufacturers of bicycle in India, provided free textbooks to more than 1,000 poor students at a function organised by the Dewan Harnam Das Saraswati Devi Trust here last evening.

According to a report, textbooks were also distributed to 1,000 children of the workers employed in the Atlas Cycle factory.

Speaking on the occasion after distributing the textbooks, Mr Vikram Kapur, additional joint president of Atlas Cycle, highlighted the various welfare schemes of the trust such as the grant of scholarships, distribution of textbooks, free supply of milk to school children, monthly pension to widows, organising free eye operation camps and other need based social welfare schemes. He said that the trust was involved in running a senior secondary school and well-equipped hospitals in Sonepat and New Delhi in the memory of Jankidas Kapur, the founder of the Atlas Cycles Haryana Limited.

Mr N. P. Sinha, chief general manager and Mr I. D. Chugh, director of Atlas Cycles, also spoke on the occasion about the various welfare schemes launched for the poor people.

Bar Association mourns Justice Yadav’s death

The District Bar Association has mourned the death of Justice Birender Singh Yadav who died at Gurgaon on July 1, following a cardiac arrest. Born on July 16, 1924, at village Bharawas in district Rewari, Justice Yadav was posted at Rohtak as District and Sessions Judge from 1971 to 1974.

Justice Yadav, who did his LL.B from Delhi University in 1949, was appointed as subordinate judge at Ambala in 1950 and was promoted as Additional District Jude in July 1967 and District Judge in 1971. During his posting as District Judge at Karnal, Justice Yadav used to go to the court on a bicycle. He worked as LR, Haryana, from 1978 to 1981 and was elevated to the High Court in 1981. He retired on July 16, 1986, on attaining the age of superannuation.

Justice Yadav was member (Judicial) of the National Consumer Commission from 1992 to 1997. It was his judgement of 1996 that had brought the doctors under the purview of the Consumer Act. The Apex Court had later upheld his order. His "tehrveen’’ would be held tomorrow at Gurgaon in Community Centre, Sukhrali.
