Need to promote homoeopathy stressed
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, July 12
A two-day workshop-cum-seminar on homoeopathy concluded at Lord Mahavira Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital here today with a note that the government should promote homoeopathic system of medicine as it is comparatively cost effective, reliable and without side-effects.

In the concluding session, Dr Ravinder Kocchar, Principal of the college, said the government should grant finance for research in homoeopathy. He said homoeopathic wings should be opened at all civil dispensaries.

Earlier, the Vice-Principal of the college, Dr Sushil Chalotra, emphasized on various aspects related to the development of homoeopathy and its official recognition.

Dr Tarun Chaudhry delivered a talk on revolutionary changes in homoeopathy. The chairperson of the International Council of Ayurveda, Punjab chapter, Dr B.K. Dutt, said the government should intervene positively to set up independent departments for ayurveda and homoeopathy as directed and practised by the Central Government so that allocated funds could be utilised properly in the public interest.

‘Wonder drug’ lures male-child seekers
Shivani Bhakoo

Kohara (Ludhiana), July 12
Administration claims on strict enforcement of the PNDT Act not withstanding, “doctors” continue to flout the Act.
A Kohara-based medical practitioner, who claims to be an RMP and practices on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road, “guarantees” the birth of a male child if a woman consumes his medicine. And he seems to be succeeding if one goes by the rush at his small clinic. He claims to have a good rapport among couples who want a male child at any cost.

Posing as a client, the correspondent approached the “doctor” to get the medicine and was given an assurance of a male child. He said, “For the past 20 years I have been practicing here. Desperate couples from Kohara and nearby villages come to me for the same reason and people have benefited from it. The medicine does not has any side-effect,” he boasted.

Interestingly, the medicine is given in the third month of pregnancy. He said,“You have to come to me after conception. In the first week of the third month I will give you medicine for five days. You will have to take one tablet each day for five days. And the result will be as desired,” he assured.

The “doctor” also claimed to be the manufacturer of the drug. It was not readily available with him and was manufactured on order. Ironically, people seem to be getting carried away by the claims of the doctor.

Ms Sukhminder Kaur, an elderly woman said,“He has been giving this medicine for the past 20 years and many have gained from it. Rest depends on God but the people of Kohara have faith in him.”

However, there was no one who could ascertain whether any of the couples who used his medicine did get a son or not.

The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable) Act clearly mentions that one can publicise such “wonder drugs”.

The practice continues unabated as there is no check by the drug inspector, Civil Surgeon or the administration.
