Rare surgery performed
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, July 8
A rare surgery was performed recently at Deepak Hospital on Mr Bharti, a resident of Fatehgarh Sahib, who had been suffering from severe chronic constipation for the past nearly 10 years, The operation is called laparoscopic total abdominal colectomy, said Dr A. Ghosh, the attending doctor.

Dr Ghosh said the patient was admitted to the hospital on June 20. He was unable to relieve himself without taking medicines. Sometimes a whole week used to pass without any bowel movement. On endoscopic examination, his whole large intestine was found to be coloured spotty black due to the effects of drugs he took, a condition known as melanosis colon. The X-ray report suggested that he had a tardy large bowel, known as colonic inertia.

Dr Ghosh said a major operation was required to extirpate the submotile colon with an incision almost extending from the top to bottom of the abdomen, which would mean much pain, blood loss and weeks of convalescence. “Instead, we preferred to perform a minimally invasive way of operation. On June 24, a few small keyholes were made in the abdomen through which the large bowel was extirpated under video guidance. A 5-cm incision was made for the removal of the diseased large intestine and the restoration of the bowel continuity.,” he said.
