Chandigarh, July 7
Isha Toor, a trainee at the Total Tennis Academy, Sector 11 here, is a new tennis force among women’s section in the city. This can be gauged from the fact that, in a majority of the tournaments — whether AITA junior talent, or AITA ranking, Chandigarh state — the titles have been bagged by this 15-year-old girl, a Class XI student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16.
Though Isha took to tennis around five years ago, she began playing tournaments only about three years ago. She said basically it were Mr LD Kapoor and Mr Pawan Kapoor of the Total Tennis Academy, who taught her the fundamentals of the sport. Earlier till Class X, she used to mostly play tournaments which were held in the region only, like the AITA zonal tournaments. Last year, Isha won the AITA zonal meets in Meerut and Delhi. This year, she was able to win two consecutive titles in the AITA talent series held at Chandigarh and Panchkula.
Isha is of the view that it is hard work and dedication for the sport which induces one to go higher and higher in terms of achievements. She said the biggest advantage in acquiring playing experience was that the more you play, the more you learn. She said, “Whenever I trail during the course of a match in any set, it does not affect my game. Rather I remain cool and make a comeback in the game”.
Isha attributed her success to her parents and grandparents who, she said, had supported her a lot and were a real motivating force besides her coaches.
On her future plans, she said, performing well in the national championship and the ITF tournaments was her immediate aim, and she would like to win the maximum number of tournaments in her age group.
Speaking about the playing surfaces, Isha praised the grass and clay courts and said, “It is great playing on these natural surfaces”.
