Shardha annexes double crown in badminton

New Delhi, June 26
Shardha Chhabra annexed a double crown when she lifted the titles in the under-19 and women’s singles events of the 14th Pt.Tirathram Memorial Badminton Tournament at the New Era Public School court, Mayapuri.

Shardha defeated Mohita 11-0, 5-11, 11-4 to lift the girls under-19 title while in the women’s singles final, Shardha beat Vanshika 11-8, 6-11, 11-6.

Anchal Malhotra, in the girls under-13 section, and Kaustav, in the boys under-13 section, also bagged double crowns.

Following are the other results (all finals): Under-10 girls singles: Shreya Aggarwal beat Shreya Suri 11-0, 11-3;

Under-10 boys: Harjeet Ralen b Sharvan Singh 11-2, 11-2; Under-13 girls singles: Aanchal Malhotra b Shristi Mehta 11-5, 11-5; doubles: Aanchal and Shristi b Niharika and Saloni 15-6, 8-15, 15-4; Under-13 boys singles: Kaustav b Bharat Bajaj 15-11, 15-8; doubles: Kaustav and Bharat b Atul and Rishab 9-15, 15-11, 15-11; Under-16 girls: Mohita Sahdev b Meenakshi 11-7, 11-9; doubles: Mohita and Meenakshi b Divya and Swati 15-2, 15-2;

Under-16 boys singles: Mayank Garg b Abhinav Prakash 15-4, 13-15, 15-8;

Doubles: Abhinav and Mayank b Vaibhav and Ashmeet 15-12, 15-10;

Himanshu, Esha Bhambri get top billing

New Delhi, June 26
Himanshu P Kala and Esha Bhambri have been seeded top in the men’s and women’s singles respectively in the first Delhi Champion Cup Table Tennis Tournament for the best 16 players to be held at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium on June 28 and 29. Nishank Bajaj, Dhruv Arora and Sarthank Gandhi have been given top billing in the boys, sub-junior boys and cadets boys events. The top 16 players in each event have been divided into four groups.

Following are the seedings:

Men: Himansh Kala, Rajiv Ghai, Nitin Mahajan and Ajay Jha. Women: Esha Bhambri, Divya Jayaram, V Malini and Shikha Sharma. Boys: Nishank Bajaj, Sunal Jain, Varun Jindal and Vishal Aggarwal. Sub-Junior Boys: Dhruv Arora, Aman Ahuja, Akash Verma and Kunal Kathuria. Cadet boys: Sarthak Gandhi, Kartik Kukreja, Piyush Dwivedi and Sajal Khandelwal.

New office-bearers

Rajiv Aggarwal was elected the president and M M Sultan the secretary of the Shastri Club in the elections held in Delhi. Navin Kumar has been elected the treasurer, while Mohd Aslam will be the coach and Trilok Singh Bist the captain.

South India down Columba’s

New Delhi, June 26
South India Club scored a facile 3-0 victory against Columba’s Youngsters in a Group II preliminary league match of the Delhi Soccer Association B Division Open Clubs Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Thursday.

After a barren first half, South India put pressure on the rival goal, and got the rewards when inside-left Raju opened the account in the 42nd minute which was consolidated by outside-left Anand in the 50th minute.

Medio Rajesh completed the tally with an angular shot five minutes later.

Friday’s fixtures: Paschim Heroes vs Delhi Tigers (4.30 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium. New Friends vs Royal Bengal (4.30 pm)—Nehru Stadium East.
