End religious fanaticism: Kalam Jammu, June 26 Dr Kalam was addressing police personnel at Udhampur after presenting colours to the J&K police. He also spoke at a special convocation of Jammu University here. He said the people were craving for peace and a great responsibility lies on the Army, Air Force, police and the state administration to achieve this objective courageously. He said terrorism resulted from various factors like difference in ideologies, religious fanaticism, discrimination and enmity between organisations and nations, constant deprivation leads to frustration and frustration on provocation leads to alienation which could manifest itself in two forms — passivism and activism. Dr Kalam stressed the need for collectively addressing these sources of disturbances by formulating visionary policies for national development with security concerns integrated and by executing those mission projects with hard work and sweat. He said it was unfortunate that the world was facing a new kind of warfare, integrated situation of religious conflicts, ideological differences and economic warfare which had to be addressed collectively. The President said the young generation, in particular, was fed up of the terror scenario and looking towards the leadership of the country for restoring peace. The leaders of the country could not ignore the call of the children for peace. He said expert teams had studied how India could be transformed into a developed nation in a time-bound manner, but for restoring peace, “we have to remove ego, violence and hatred from our minds.” He stressed the need for empowerment at various levels for transformation of India into a developed country. Dr Kalam started his three-day tour of the state paying obeisance at the Vaishno Devi shrine. He walked about 2 km from Sanjhi Chhat to reach the cave shrine after disembarking from his helicopter. He was at the shrine for about two hours. The President greeted devotees by chanting “jai mata ki”. He also interacted with some devotees returning from the shrine. Dr Kalam interacted with children at the Raj Bhavan here. Most of the children expressed keenness to know how long would it take peace to return here and also for the prosperity of the country. While presenting colours to the police at Udhampur, Dr Kalam said he was aware of the happiness and pains of the people of the state as he had constantly remained in touch with them. The President eulogised the role of the state police in combating militancy and said it had been the first force to deal with all types of terrorism. The police was playing a big role in joint operations with the Army and security forces. He called for the use of advanced technology for better policing to tackle the complexities of terrorism and stressed the need for linking the headquarters of the J&K police with its counterparts in the other states. He suggested a link between police stations and their state headquarters. The Governor, Lt-Gen (retd) S.K. Sinha, who is Chancellor of Jammu University, and the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who is the Pro-Chancellor, also spoke at the convocation. Earlier in the morning, Dr Kalam was received at the airport here by the Governor, Chief Minister and senior officers of the Army and civil administration. Dr Kalam also visited a camp of the migrant Kashmiri Pandit. SRINAGAR: Elaborate security arrangements are underway to receive Dr Kalam, who arrives here tomorrow evening after hectic engagements in Jammu and Ladakh regions of Jammu and Kashmir. The President will visit the Hazratbal Shrine and interact with students of the Women’s College, M.A. Road. The areas around the venues as also other places, including the Delhi Public School and Software Technology Park, are getting elaborate security arrangements. Geelani stays away from Hurriyat meeting Srinagar, June 26 In a rare event, the Hurriyat Conference did not issue a statement after the three-hour meeting of the Executive with a spokesman for the 25-party conglomerate describing the get-together of six Executive members as a “routine” matter. It was a routine matter and the meeting was inconclusive, the spokesman said. However, sources in the Hurriyat said Mr Geelani’s decision not to turn up for the meeting put a damper on the proceedings as the amalgam was scheduled to discuss some important matters, including the future Chairman. Incumbent Abdul Gani Bhat’s term expires next month. The sources said it was likely that the Hurriyat would ask the Jamaat to send another representative in case Mr Geelani decided to stay away from the proceedings. They said immediately after the meeting, the Hurriyat Chairman went to meet Amir-e-Jamaat Ghulam Mohammad Bhat to discuss the issue. Mr Geelani told PTI that he would continue to keep away from Hurriyat meetings as long as the amalgam did not take action against its constituent, the People’s Conference, for taking part in last year’s assembly elections through dummy candidates. Among other things discussed at the meeting was the appointment of a two-member Hurriyat delegation to meet high commissioners and ambassadors of various countries, including Pakistan envoy Aziz Ahmad Khan, who is arriving in Delhi this month, the sources said. They said the two members, besides receiving Mr Aziz Khan, would also try to create awareness about the Kashmir issue. —
