AIDS control society holds camps

Three medical-cum-awareness camps were organised today at government dispensaries in Indira Colony, Dhanas and Sarangpur by the UT State AIDS Control Society. The camps were held in collaboration with NGOs as a part of the Family Health Awareness Campaign. Medicines and information brochures were also distributed.

According to a press release, about 600 residents attended the camp conducted at Government Dispensary in Indira Colony in association with PGI’s Department of Community Medicines. About 319 patients were examined. About 99 cases of reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted infections were detected. As many as 28 blood samples were also collected. Addressing a gathering, Director Health Services, Dr C.P. Bansal, said such camps were effective for generating awareness.

At another camp organised at Dhanas with help of the Indian Council of Social Welfare, about 400 residents were informed about HIV/AIDS. About 72 persons were examined. Four sought treatment for reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted infections. The routes of transmission were explained by Project Director of State AIDS Control Society, Dr N.M. Sharma.

In her introductory speech, society’s honorary general secretary Sharestha Mehta said camps were necessary for not only creating awareness, but for detecting diseases. In another camp organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra at Sarangpur, awareness talk was delivered. About 175 people attended the camp.

Mann to continue as Director-Principal

Chandigarh, June 26
Director Principal of Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital, Professor S.B.S. Mann, will continue on the post till further orders, as per the directions issued by the Union Health Ministry to the UT Administration.

In a related development, sources confirmed that the Administration has rejected five candidates interviewed for the post. The sources added that the Administration was yet to take a decision on calling another panel of doctors from Panjab and Haryana or to fill the post through direct recruitment.

It may be recalled that hospital faculty and senior doctors have been asking the Administration to appoint a new incumbent on permanent basis.

Minerva Academy win

The Ist Lieut-Col I.S. Deol Memorial Cricket Tournament began here today. According to Mr Ranjit Bajaj, organising secretary of the tournament, 32 teams are taking part in the meet.

In the two matches played today, Minerva Academy got the better of Greenfield Public School by eight wickets while the CICA XI downed Garhwal Cricket Club by six wickets.

Brief scores: Ist tie: Greenfield Public School: 113 runs all out in 22 overs (Ram Kumar 38, Rakesh Jolly 3 for nine, Udai Kiran Singh 2 for seven, Gaurav 2 for 12, Sushil Siwach 2 for 14); Minerva Academy: 115 runs for two in 16.2 overs (Amar Singh 51, Harish Garg 43, Ashutosh 2 for 24).

Tennis meet from June 30

A prestigious tennis tournament of the region, The Fort St. Soldier’s Total Tennis AITA Championship will be held from June 30 to July 5 on the St. Soldier’s Total Academy premises at Sector 16, Panchkula. Giving this information, Mr Devender Kapoor, tournament director, said players from various states of northern India will take part in this meet. He said the sign-in for the qualifying rounds will be held on June 29 from 12 to 3 pm. The main draw matches would, however, begin from July 2.

Local lad for European golf tour

Anoop Tejinder, a student of BA first year of the local DAV College, will participate in the European junior golf tour events to be held in Austria, Poland, Czech Republic and Latvia next month. Anoop (18) took to golf when he was a student of St John’s High School under the guidance of Amandeep Johal, a reputed golfer.

Anoop represented India in the 22nd Asian Pacific Junior golf tournament held at the RCGC in May, 2000. He also won the Castrol Toyota Open Golf Tournament held at Jalandhar.

Anoop said it was the guidance of Amandeep Johal and Harmeet Kahlon and the inspiration of Dr Donato Di Ponziano of Italy, which has infused confidence in him. He wants to attain dizzy heights in golf, he added.
