Shuttlers interact with former Asian star

Chandigarh, June 25
It was a relatively different experience today for almost 40 odd shutttlers at the Panjab University gymnasium hall, when they had the audience of former Asian badminton star Wg Cdr Satish Bhatia.

Today’s session was part of the 15-day talent hunt-cum-training camp organised by the Chandigarh Badminton Association which is being held under the supervision of SAI coach Surinder Mahajan.

Wing Commander Bhatia had an interactive session with the children who were curious to know about the spin service of former legendary which used to baffle the prominent players more than three decades back. Bhatia gave practical demonstration of the spin service and said, now a days, hardly few of the players go in for the spin service may be the specifications of the shuttlecock have changed. He asked the young trainees to devote more attention to various kinds of service.

He said long service and high long service were crucial for any player. Bhatia who had once extended seven-time world champion Rudy Hartono of Indonesia to three games, said, for any player to have a dominating effect on its opponent, it was vital to give pause before doing ‘service’ to a opponent.

Mahajan said the children were privileged to have among them the presence of person of the stature of Mr Bhatia. He said the lecture and the practical demonstration would enable the trainees get useful tips for their game. The camp will end on June 28.

Panchkula district cricket team

Chandigarh, June 25
A 16-member Panchkula district cricket team has been selected by the Panchkula District Cricket Association, after the selection trials held today. According to Mr Sandeep Moudgil, secretary of the association, the team is: Vishal Goel, Sunny Sharma, Shiva Metha, Vaneet Goel, Shiv Raj, Raman Vats, Trilok Sangha, Karandeep Singh, Mandeep Singla, Kulbir Singh, Pankaj, Rahul Kamboj, Amanpreet Singh, Javed Hassan and Varun Khanna.

The selected players will undergo intensive coaching in the academy run by the association throughout the cricket season at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala. The camp will begin here tomorrow.

International Olympic Day

The Department of Sports, Panjab University, Chandigarh, will organise matches in football and kho-kho on June 27 at 5 pm while the badminton matches on June 28 on the university campus. According to Mr Kewal Singh, Assistant Director Sports, PU, the matches are being organised to mark the International Olympic day celebrations.
