Our Correspondent

Mandi Gobindgarh, June 24
With results of BA (III) and BCom (III) classes of Punjabi University yet to be declared, the last date to apply for entrance tests for admission to law and MA classes expired on June 18 and June 23, respectively.

Under the university rules, the students who have appeared in BA, BCom (III) examination may apply for the test, but in case they fail in the examination or in any one of the subjects, their eligibility will be cancelled. Consequently, they lose Rs 400 in the form of prospectus charges besides other expenses, according to Mr Dalip Singh Pandhi, former minister and former member of the university syndicate, while addressing mediapersons here today.

Mr Pandhi has appealed the university authorities to extend the admission dates of law and MA classes. The former minister has also criticised the hike in university fee. He has also flayed the appointment of a team of chairmen of various corporations, which were suffering huge losses.

From sad songs to peppy numbers

Ludhiana, June 24
Dedication to one’s profession, coupled with luck, does provide opportunities to the promising singers and writers like Raj Kumar. After learning the basics of song writing from Ustad Chann Guriyanwale, Raj finally got a break. The ustad used to write songs for Punjabi films. Raj learnt from him the technicalities of song writing.

Armed with knowledge, Raj set to write Punjabi songs. He got a break when Punjabi pop singer Malkiat Singh and his brother Harvinder Singh sang his lyrics ‘Nachna sade nal nachna’. Encouraged by this, he started writing with renewed vigour and again both the brothers lent voice to his song from an audio album ‘Kurti’. The wordings of the song were ‘Nacda Canada’.

Raj Kumar says: “I generally like to write sad songs. Somehow I feel songs with wistfulness have a lingering recall value. Moreover, my teacher also penned sad songs. But my next few songs are peppy numbers. The music directors have put in a lot of beat.”

So far Raj has written more than 70 songs. He says the other singer who has sung his song is Aakash Deep. He has sung ‘Vichdhi tu ro ro ke’ in the latest album ‘Rehan Tere Dil Vich’.

Raj Kumar is presently working as a part-time cameraman with Jalandhar Doordarshan.
