Awareness programme for middle-aged women
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, June 21
The feeling of well-being can be restored in middle-aged women after they have finished their reproductive phase with little care, senior gynaecologist and menopause consultant Dr Meenal Kumar has asserted.

Addressing a gathering at an awareness programme organised for the benefit of middle-aged women by the Public Health Education and Awareness Centre, she added that simple measures, taken under the supervision of a gynaecologist, could mitigate the sufferings of women feeling neglected and helpless.

Defining menopausal zone as the period extending from 40 to cover the rest of the life, she felt that the awareness and access to medical services for women in the zone was miniscule though it covered almost half of their lives. She also outlined the common health problems encountered by women after 40.

Common questions from the audience pertained to not feeling well, sleeplessness, hot flushes, confusion, irritability, bone pains, urinary and sex problems, blood pressure, heart problems and skin roughness. Replying to the queries, she dispelled fears about the role of hormonal replacement therapy in the management and prevention of several health problems. Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, June 21
Can Abhinav Bindra live up to the expectations of crores of Indians by bringing home an Olympic medal in shooting?

If one goes by his current performance and the views generated by experts, there is bright hope for this 21-year-old shooter.

Abhinav’s hard work and continuous exposure to international tournaments over the years have helped him grow as a shooter, viewed Mr Gurbir Singh, President of the Punjab Rifle Shooting Association, who hoped that Abhinav would perform well in the Olympics.

He said Abhinav, at this young age, had performed exceptionally well, especially among players who were quite senior to him.

Sadly, with more than a year left for Athens Olympics, Abhinav is pleading for government support to fund his training.

When asked, Abhinav said: “In countries like the USA, Olympic Committee supports the players, but here the system is slightly different.”

Col Jagir Singh Dhillon, Abhinav’s coach, is confident of a good show by him in the days to come.
