A medical college in Ahirwal need of the hour
Our Correspondent

Narnaul, June 20
The health services in the Ahirwal and Mewat regions, covering Nangal Chaudhary in Mahendragarh district, Gurgaon and Faridabad, are in the doldrums. If the equipment used in the government health centres in these regions are obsolete and rusted, the personnel who hold the posts are either untrained or inefficient.

A visit to the district hospital at Narnaul revealed that everything is in a mess. There is total chaos in both the Out Patient Department and Casualty, supposed to be the centre of activities in a hospital. Fortunately, the surgery section has earned all-round appreciation from the residents of the city.

If this is the situation in this important hospital, one can visualise the scene at other health centres in the rural areas. The result is that people of both Mewat and Ahirwal regions have to go to Delhi, Jaipur or Rohtak to get quality treatment. Of course, it comes with a huge cost.

Observers attribute this state of affairs to the reluctance of the private health sector to invest in these regions and lack of qualified manpower, both doctors and paramedical staff, to work in rural areas. The Medical Council of India has, perhaps, done more harm in this direction as it is considered to be the single most powerful stumbling block in attracting private investments in medical education. It must have followed the footsteps of the All India Council of Technical Education, which has allowed technical institutions to come up in all areas, making India a giant in engineering know-how.

India is a country of villages and hamlets and Haryana is no exception. A medical institution in every two districts is a dire need of the present day. At least in medical education and services, we must follow the model of China. The BSc students with a biology background should be trained in such a way that they could work as a paramedic after getting a double degree in science and medicine. The Chhattisgarh Government is working on such a plan. At least one new medical college should be started every year in the state so that the health services may be improved.

Residents here say that the government must start a medical college in the backward region of Ahirwal. Since there is no institute of higher education in the region, this will go a long way in correcting the regional imbalances in higher education avenues.
