3 bare at safai karamcharis’ rally
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 19
About 200 retrenched safai karamcharis of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), took out a semi-nude rally, here today.
Accusing the hospital authorities and the contractor of misleading the UT Administration about their demands, the retrenched safai karamcharis stripped as they marched from the GMCH to the Sector 17 Health Department office and later to Matka Chowk.

The move evoked police action and a case was registered at the Sector 19 police station. According to the police, Ranbir, Sakyi Ram and Sonu were booked under Section 294 of the IPC for performing an obscene act at a public place. While Ranbir and Sakyi Ram were arrested and later released on bail, Sonu gave the police a slip.

The workers’ union threatened to stage a protest rally in front of the office of the President and Prime Minister in New Delhi. They said the indifferent attitude of the contractor and the hospital authorities had compelled them to take this extreme step.

All 188 safai karamcharis of the GMCH have been on strike since May 26 in protest against the retrenchment of about 40 of their colleagues by the Praheri Security and Detective Services.
