Hospital trauma unit opens today

Ludhiana, June1
Mr A. P. Pandey, Director, Vigilance Bureau, Punjab, would inaugurate Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Hospital here tomorrow.

Dr Waheguru Pal Singh, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said the unit had been provided with the latest equipment and would offer excellent treatment to general public at affordable charges. OC

City karatekas win 5 medals

Ludhiana, June 1
Ludhiana karatekas reaped a haul of five medals, including three gold, in the Sher-e-Punjab Sardar Beant Singh Memorial National Karate Championship (W.U.K.O and Full Contact) held at Hans Raj Stadium in Jalandhar yesterday and today. According to Mr Ramesh Kumar Kainth, founder of the Defence and Attack Karate Association, who accompanied the team, more than 200 karatekas took part in this meet and seven boys represented Ludhiana in this championship. Dhuv Kochhar, student of Class III of DAV Public School clinched the gold medal in the 15 to 20 kg category. Other gold medal winners were Rajesh Kumar (55 to 60 kg) and Vijay Kumar (50-55 kg).

In the 45 to 50 kg category, Ramesh Kumar won the silver medal while Manoj Kumar bagged the bronze in the 40 to 45 kg category. Mohil Rishi, student of class VI of DAV Public School and Gaurav Sharma of Class IV of Sacred Heart School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, here, competed in this championship, but could not finish among the medal winners.

Riat XI dethrone Friends Club

An unbeaten ton by Rakesh Sethi (119 n.o.) went in vain as the defending champions, Friends Club, lost to Riat XI by three wickets in the final of the 8th Invitation Cricket Cup Tournament organised by the College of Agriculture of Punjab Agricultural University on its campus ground here today.

Batting first, Friends Club made 194 for 8 in their allotted 35 overs. Rakesh Sethi remained unbeaten on 119. Other batsmen who made notable contributions were Devinder and Virdi who scored 23 and 15 runs, respectively.

Riat XI achieved the target in the second-last over after losing seven wickets. Amit Behl and Lucky Sodhi were the main architects of Riat XI’s victory, scoring 48 and 35 runs, respectively.

Rakesh Sethi was adjudged the player of the tournament. He also bagged the best batsman award, while Amit Behl of Riat XI was declared the best bowler. Sunil Sharma of MC XI was named the veteran player of the tournament. Dr G.S. Nanda, Director, Research, PAU, gave away the prizes to the winners.
