Friends Club, Riat XI enter semi-finals

An unfinished 141-run partnership for the second wicket between Rakesh Sethi (77 n.o) and Rajan Singh (55 n.o) enabled the Friends Club to score an authentic 9-wicket victory over the Hero Club and secure a berth in the last-four stage of the eight Invitation Cricket Cup Tournament being organised by the College of Agriculture Club of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) at its ground here today.

In the second match, the Riat XI defeated the National Club of Doraha by 52 runs to enter the semi-finals.

Batting first, the Friends Club made 148 for 8 in the allotted 25 overs. The main contributors were Sukhpal and Ajay who made 33 and 37 runs, respectively.

The Friends Club achieved the target in 21 overs, losing just one wicket.

The Riat XI, batting first scored 201 for 6. Bhupinder and Sunil shared 139-run partnership for the second wicket. Bhupinder made 75 runs with the help of 11 boundaries and Sunil hit 58 runs.

In reply, the National Club made 149 runs in their quota of overs.

Shooting meet begins

Shooters from Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, have established a lead over others in the XIIth Ludhiana District Shooting Championship being held at Grewal Sports Club, Kila Raipur, near here, today.

In the sub-junior (women) open sight air rifle event, Sargam scored 229 out of 400 points while in the sub-junior (men) air pistol, Shantanu secured 304 points. In the open sight for sub-junior (men), Amardeep got 160 out of 400 points.

Gaurav Singla, student of St Thomas School, shot 317 out of 400 points to lead in open sight air rifle for men and for junior men. Ravinder Kaur of Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women, Sabzi Mandi, with 289 points is leading in open sight air rifle (junior and senior women) events. In the air pistol event, Simranjit Singh of S D Government College for Boys scored 346 points to establish the lead.

Mr G.S. Garcha, honorary general secretary of the District Rifle Association, said around 70 shooters were taking part in this two-day meet and about half of them competed today. On the basis of their performance during this tourney, the Ludhiana teams would be picked up for the forthcoming Punjab State Shooting Championship scheduled to be held at SAS Nagar next month.

Taekwon-do body meeting today

Ludhiana, May 24
The general-body meeting of the Punjab Taekwon-do Association (PTA) will be held here in Guru Nanak Sports Complex on May 25 at 4 pm. According to a press note issued here by Mr Jaspal Singh, general secretary of the association, the meeting would be presided over by the body president, Mr Mantar Singh Brar.

The executive committee members of the PTA, representatives of the District Taekwondo Associations, Punjab Olympic Association and the Director Sports Punjab have been invited to attend the meeting, during which, problems faced by the association would be discussed. A decision to conduct the state championship would also be taken at the meeting, the note said.
